Internet outage Plex app won't launch on NVidia Shield **RANT** and a question

Server Version#: latest release
Player Version#: latest release

I’m a Starlink user. We had a global outage last Friday for nearly an hour. I have a LAN with my NVidia Shield and PLEX Media Server connected. When I launched the Plex app on the Shield it was just a black screen with the spinning yellow circle until it finally said there was no internet connection after about 15 minutes. This is the same behavior when I use airplane mode on my Android phone.

The apps really should be smart enough to realize there is no internet connection and do the appropriate thing. In the Shield’s case, it should see the local network connection is still good and therefore, it should just try to connect to the local media server it’s aware of. In the phone’s case it should just go directly to downloaded media.
END RANT

Is there a way we can get around the lack of internet access in these scenarios? Thanks for your time.

If you prepare for it when you do have internet, Plex will work when the net is down:

Yes, you have to change some settings. If you do a search online for “how to run plex when internet is down” and you’ll get a how to on the settings to change. It isn’t terrible difficult and should not leave you more exposed, security wise.
