Plex Server requiring Internet access to load

Server Version#: 1.27.1.5916
Player Version#: N/A

Due to the Canada-wide network outage on July 8, 2022, I discovered that I had trouble accessing my Plex Servers at home internally. Not sure if it’s a bug or a feature.

I have two Plex Servers on my home network. One on a Windows 11 machine, and another one on an nVidia Shield.

To my understanding, the Internet outage started some time around 5 AM EDT. Around noon, I was still able to go to the web interface and schedule a recording to record the news at noon. However, before dinner time, I was unable to log on to either the Windows machine or the Shield. Even though I was connecting to the servers using the internal IP address, as well as the loopback address (127.0.0.1) on the Windows machine iteslf and not through app.plex.tv. Both were trying to contact plex.tv (no app in front) as the error message said, and it reported it was unsuccessful.

After multiple tries, I was able to go onto the Windows machine and connect to it as it kept spinning, and it took a long time to load. However, the web interface of the Windows Plex Server was unable to see the Shield server was online as it had the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. The Shield was pingable by its static IP address. Also, the Plex app wouldn’t load on the Shield itself as it was reporting Ethernet was not connected, even though it was as I could use Kodi on the Shield to play videos on my NAS. It’s probably some connectivity check the Shield does on its own.

Anyway, it just surprised me that “phoning home” is such a important component. I always thought it checks periodically. I guess it needs the Internet for the Guide, but if the Guide was already downloaded, why it would just load? I just needed to see it for programs airing within the next half hour.
