Not sure why but after updating to the new client, it is no longer playing the local synced content first. Instead, the client still streams and I have to force it offline in order for it to start playing synced content.
I’ve tried to replicate this, and I can’t. What makes you think it’s playing the remote version rather than the local one?
Environment
Server : Ubuntu 18.04
Plex version Version 1.13.5.5291
Client: iOS 11.4.1
Plex version:
Steps to Recreate
Create a playlist from a flac source
Set the sync quality settings to 192KBS
Sync the playlist to iphone
Play any of the items from playlist while connected to wifi or cellular
The system immediately goes to direct play
How to confirm
- Plex status dashboard confirms direct play
- Plexpy confirm cellphone ip and that cell phone is streaming file at the original quality
- Log into ubuntu and execute iftop and toggle to monitor transmitted traffic, you’ll see
traffic of the file being streamed
It will always show traffic from reporting the playback, and the synced content will direct play. If you want a true test, use cellular, and set the remote music quality to a low enough setting that it would force a transcode from your server. If it direct plays, then it’s using the synced copy, if it’s transcoding, then it’s playing from your remote server. You can also just put your phone in airplane mode and see if playback stops or continues.
Thank you the test worked as you outlined! The synced content reported direct playing but an items I knew wasn’t synced immediately reflected the settings on the client
Internet Streaming Original changed to -> 96kbps
Limit Cellular Data set to .7 Mbps
Allow Direct play On changed to -> Off
Prefer Offline Content set to on
No worries! I hope this assures you that local content is being played. It’s just the playback being reported you see on the server
Yes it does and this helps explains why when I run into spotty wifi/cellaur why plex hangs/crashes while playing local content ( Probably get hung trying to communicate back )
Usually I resolve it by placing the phone in airplane mode, starting up plex, placing plex in offline mode and then starting to play the offline content. Get really old turning it on and off. Thank you again for your insight.
