Server Version#: 1.40.1.8227
Player Version#: 8.33 / 4.10.1
For several years I was running Plex Server on a Synology server. No issues at all. Mobile apps connected fine, no need to forward a port.
I have recently switched to a new server running Proxmox. Plex Server is running in a Ubuntu 22.04 vm, all is playing well on local network, 4k HDR etc is all good. I do not share the service with anyone.
Only issue is that the mobile Plex and Plexamp apps will not find the libraries when on a cell network (not on local lan wifi). This is the exact same phone/cell carrier as before (when on the previous synology plex server). Same happens when using a vpn on the phone, I dont think it is the cell carrier causing this. Both apps will work when on the local lan wifi.
There is no firewall on the proxmox server, and no firewall on the Plex VM. The network firewall is the same as when using the synology plex server, nothing changed there.
One thing i have noticed is that if you leave the Plexamp app open/visible when the phone screen sleeps the app is then a blank black screen and cannot be seen again without deleting/reinstalling.
At a loss here… any help would be appreciated…
Specs:

Ios: 17.4.1
Mobile Plexamp App: 4.10.1
Mobile Plex App: 8.33
Ubuntu Server: 22.04.4 LTS
If no port forward was manually set up then perhaps your Synology was using UPnP? It would have setup the port forwarding automatically if so, as I am pretty sure it’s required for it to work.
I would enable this on your new server or check your firewall settings.
I was able to get it to work by forwarding the port. Once it connected I was able to close the port and the apps work without the port being open… (I never have upnp enabled on my firewalls…)
I think you don’t have a stable, nor a fast solution there.
Plex remote access requires an open port on the WAN interface of your router. Which needs to be forwarded to port 32400 on the internal IP address of your Plex server machine. (only TCP traffic, and only this one port)
if 1) is absent, it can make use of a relay connection, which is neither fast nor of particularly low latency. (2mbps with Plex pass, 1mbps without)
A relay connection might be sufficient for most audio content, but not for video. (And even that only if the reception of the cell signal is good and stable.)
That must be what it is then… I’ll consider opening the port, I’m just concerned that plex is on a privileged lxc so worried about security issues.
I’m trying to find out how to configure Plex on a full VM with Quicksync enabled but so far cant find a guide for that anywhere (for my 12th gen 17 cpu)
