Is closed captioning supported on OTA content?

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1913
Player Version#: 7.22.1.12828

Running PMS on NVidia Shield. Using a HDHomeRun Connect Quattro network tuner for OTA.

Recording OTA channels without any issues but for the life of me cannot get the close captioning to “show up” on any of the Plex clients (Shield, Roku, iOS) for either the recordings or even while watching LiveTV.

For recordings “Unknown (EIA_608)” shows up as an option for subtitles but makes no difference if it is selected or not; no subtitles/captioning show up on the screen.

So question to ask is closed captioning supported by PMS running on a Nvidia Shield? If so, what is the magic sauce required to make it work? :slightly_smiling_face:

I just tested on my Roku Tv and I see the same Unknown (EIA_608) you see (also using HDHomeRun Connect Quattro & HDHomeRun EXTEND on my network) At least on Roku did you turn Roku Captions on also before selecting the Unknown (EIA_608) in the Streams section? because I had them come right on after doing both.

Ok, so I got the closed captioning to show up on recorded shows on the Roku devices. I had to change the video settings to enable MPEG2 and DirectStream. Also had to change the quality to “original” for local streaming. Once I did that, CC is working fine on those devices.

I noticed that after making all of the above changes that the PMS dashboard was showing DirectStream for BOTH video and audio even when subtitles were enabled on the client.

However, I still have the issue on other clients/players (Shield, Samsung TV, Sony TV (Android)). No matter what video settings I set on the client as soon as I enable the subtitles on the client, the PMS dashboard shows the video stream as being transcoded via hardware. I can only assume that during the transcoding process, the CC data is being stripped out and hence can’t be displayed/rendered by the client…

I’m also running an Nvidia Shield TV as a server, but with a HD Homerun Extend. The server strips commercials and (I assume) reencodes the video at that point. I can get the closed captioning to work on my PC using the Desktop App (haven’t tried the web browser or other devices), so I don’t think the Shield is stripping the closed captioning. Hope that helps.
