Is it possible to use Xfinity as a live tv provider?

I am an Xfinity cable subscriber wanting to save on my equipment rental bill. I am wondering if there is a way to port Xfinity live TV to plex.

You will need a supported cable card, and a supported capture device.

You will have to consult XFinity to see if there is a cable card you can purchase on the market, otherwise you still have to rent one from them.

And Something like this for your capture: https://www.silicondust.com/product/hdhomerun-prime-6/

Prime 6 is not available yet. Are there any other devices?

If you can find an HDHomeRun Prime (The first generation), that should also work…

Check this list for compatible devices: https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/

You’ll need to see which ones support cable on your own. But you’re looking for something that supports QAM for North America… ATSC is Broadcast and QAM is cable.

Also, some of your channels from your cable provider will not work due to Encryption, I am unsure which these are as they vary by provider as far as I am aware… But it won’t be a full experience like you have with a Cable Box.

  • You will need to have Plex Pass.
  • Comcast will provide a Cable Card in lieu of the first cable STB for no additional fee
  • Comcast will credit you $2.50/month for using your own equipment
  • Using Plex LiveTV/DVR, you will be restricted from accessing DRM channels
  • Comcast applies DRM to Premium Channels and PPV
  • There will be no access to Comcast xFinity OnDemand

Which channels are DRM?

Examples would be HBO and Showtime. There will be no access to those channels via Plex LiveTV/DVR. You will need to use the Silicon Dust HDHomeRun app or other DRM-enabled apps.

Any device that is not hdhomerun. It does not have to be officially supported.

I understand that. I don’t keep a running list of devices in my head which support video capture for Cable and Antenna though. So I pointed you towards a list that you can look through as a starting point and gave you the tools (QAM vs. ATSC) necessary to find a device that you could use. Also, your goal was to use the device with Plex, so I gave you a list of devices that are known to work with Plex as they are “officially supported” by Plex. There is another list somewhere, possibly even linked on that page, of devices that users have made work with Plex as well…
