I got the same email a lot of you received about an end of life for a list of smart tv’s, on 9/30/2021. Didn’t see any mention about Tivo boxes. I can log into my Tivo Plex account and see my movie/tv collection, but none of the media plays anymore. Just 3 dots. Any one else experiencing this?
Plex people, can you please reply with a statement on whether Plex is no longer supported on Tivo Boxes? I have the latest Tivo Edge
okay, horrible news. I’m beyond angry. But even when I follow the “instructions” to create an “unsecure” connection on in the Tivo Plex app and on my PMS (both running on my private home network), it still doesn’t work.
My “remote access” is also continuously dropping. Used to be a big fan, but now Plex is more intersted in streaming no name brand channels and video games, instead of concentrating on a working app that can be used on a cable box. after all, that’s what Tivo is, a cable box
Well, I too am upset. Plex for Tivo is on the blacklist, so that’s that. No sense in that ever changing. Once the “alexa” voice features were mysteriously removed, I knew it was all downhill from that point on, On the brightside, Plex is still a thriving company, despite abandoning Tivo. So much for having one remote in your hand and not having to switch tv inputs and using another streaming box.
As for all the connection issues I had yesterday, I ran upon another post that suggested changing the only way to get my Tivo Plex app to work was to go to the Plex Server page and make the following change: SETTINGS > NETWORK > SECURE CONNECTIONS > DISABLED. The recommendation from the 9/30 waring was to change it to “PREFERRED”, but that neve worked.
I’m writing the kind of post here that usually annoys me, but I’ll be that annoying guy and say it: how long is TiVo really going to be around anyway? It’s a dinosaur at this point, as much as it pains me to say it. Best to let it go…
I’m a 20-year TiVo subscriber. From the original Series 1 all the way up to the bolt. I stuck with them when Macrovision bought the company but it was honestly all downhill after that. I’ve had a love-hate relationship with TiVo since the Series 3, really (what a fiasco THAT was).
What I eventually realized is that there is no reason for TiVo anymore and it’s just a waste of money. I switched to an HDHomeRun Prime and Plex. While it’s true the Plex DVR might be missing some of the TiVo features (like commercial skip - though turning on thumbnails for my recorded shows makes it easy enough to manually skip), it’s a viable alternative. I really don’t miss anything from the TiVo at all, and am very happy to not be paying the insanely overpriced TiVo subscriptions any more. Plex works just fine for my purposes.
Seems to work fine on my Android TV devices, web browsers, the windows client, XBOX, and Roku. Roku continues to be my favorite Plex client. Roku devices are cheap and for the most part it “just works”.
So, apologies for the “the answer is to use something else” post, but Plex really does work quite well (mostly…) as a DVR.
Yeah, it’s not really Plex’s fault for this. The issue is related to the big brouhaha lately about Let’s Encrypt certificates (sort of) expiring. These certificates are installed into the operating system of the device that Plex is installed on, and are used to ensure someone claiming to be you logging in really ARE you. These certificates also (for some BIZARRE REASON) have an expiration date. Once that date comes up, the ONLY way to update the certificate used for encryption is to update the OS installed in the device, which is done by the device manufacturers. It sounds like Tivo no longer updates their devices (and if they do, they don’t touch certs), so the certificate Plex relies on will no longer work. So a workaround is to simply disable requiring a secure connection between your client and a Plex server by doing this workaround.
I don’t know if this helps any of you TiVo users but the little TiVo Stream 4K is supposedly a decent Plex client. It’s by no means as good as some others for the same price, but I think it retains a mostly familiar TiVo style remote and may have TiVo features that I am unaware of. But if the single remote for everything is a big concern then I would still suggest Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield, or Apple TV. I have used all three and and all three have remotes that can absolutely control 90-95% of what you could ever need to do in a home theater which imo is about as good as you can ask for with universal remotes anyway.
I will say though that those of you using TiVo for a subscription based cable service, give a Chromecast with Google TV and YouTubeTV a try. I recently made the switch to YouTubeTV and I have to say that in combination with devices like the Chromecast or Nvidia Shield it is an excellent experience. The Chromecast with Google TV combined with YouTubeTV may be the single best viewing experience I have had with cable ever. The way that it seamlessly integrates into the UI of Google TV is truly excellent.
What a coincidence. I had just setup a Plex server for the first time around the end of September and was using the client on my Tivo Edge. It worked for a few days and then quit. I never could figure it out.
Thanks for the corrected, and more helpful advice on TIVO than the Plex announcement.
Last night I had to redo my router setup and I thought I had hosed something as my Plex App on TIVO stopped working. I probably just haven’t used the Plex Tivo App since mid September and was unaware of the expired certificate issues. Since that time I have updated the Plex server, and my router software which lead to too many variables to troubleshoot easily, so I was very happy to find an easy solution, which solved the certificate issue with a simple change to Disabling the Secure Connection.
Because I have a video splitter tied to my Tivo Bolt and my 2 tvs, I find the TIVO App more convenient than my using my pc and the 2 chrome cast device methods I also have in place because of the TIVO remotes controlling almost everything except switching video inputs. I am thinking about buying a TiVo Stream 4K with remote this coming Black Friday, and its good to hear that it is a good platform for Plex.
I was an early TIVO adopter having won my first series 1 and a Sony TV in a sales contest at work. I have had probably a dozen units over the years, hacking series 1’s and given them away as upgraded gifts to family and kids in college.
I always used the lifetime sub, except on maybe one or two devices that were going to be gifts or for the office. If patient, you can always wait for a promo to allow moving your lifetime sub to another newer device.
My 2 Tv’s are older, and have limited Smart TV features. I will admit though I am now down to my last unit, a Bolt as Tivo stopped supporting its older devices, but the TiVo Stream 4K may prove to extend my TIVO inventory.
