Plex no longer works on Armstrong Tivo cable box as of 09/30/2021

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033
Player Version#: 3.13.14
Tivo Version: 21.0

Problem: When playing a video through the Plex app using the Armstrong cable box, the video does not start. After approx. 45 seconds a Plex error screen states, “There was a problem playing this item. The video did not start playing in time.” Below that is a button that states Go Back. Same thing happens playing music, the music does not start.

I have been in contact with Armstrong Cable about this problem. We verified that Plex running on Windows 10 had Secure Connections set to Preferred. We then went in to the Plex app running on the Armstrong Tivo cable box and changed the Allow Insecure Connections from Never to Always. We deleted the Plex security certificate in Windows 10 and restarted the computer. Once restarted everything worked as it always had. But the problem comes back, as soon as you exit the Plex app on the cable box to go to Live TV or DVR. When you return to the Plex app for the 2nd or future times, the video or music, will once again, no longer play. I checked to make sure that the Allow Insecure Connections setting had not changed from Always. You must delete the Tivo certificate and reboot the computer again to fix the problem. Tivo through the Armstrong cable box will work correctly only one time then fail upon subsequent openings. I have 3 televisions. I can replicate this problem on all 3 televisions. This happens in all user profiles. Plex works perfectly on all of my computers (Windows & Mac), iPhones & iPads. Prior to Thursday, September 30th, Plex worked perfectly on all televisions.

Does anyone have a suggestion how I might fix this problem?

Thank you … Dave

Hi Dave, the problem you are experiencing is described here: Important information about Plex for smart TVs after September 30, 2021

HOWEVER the fix they give does not work on Tivo boxes. You have to set secure connections to “Disabled” on the server for it to work as well as turning off security on the Plex app on the Tivo device as described in the link article.

The problem is, when I set secure connections to “Disabled” on the server, then none of the other devices such as iPhone, iPads, etc. work. I’d rather lose the Armstrong Tivo cable box functionality and keep all of the other devices.

I wonder why it is so difficult to provide a secure connection on the Armstrong Tivo cable box?
