Is Plex HTPC some sort of awful joke?

I’m sorry but what the hell even is this supposed to be, an app from 2009?

  • No mouse support, only for clicks not navigation
  • Laggy interface
  • Clicks often do not work
  • Cannot choose which monitor it starts on

The only reason I tried this was because you removed the ios remote control function from the windows player app, think i’ll use another media server now, the HTPC is just an absolute joke of an app.

There’s nothing wrong with HTPC, it’s just not the right app for your use case

Plex for Windows or Plex Web both use a mouse (but you want to use a remote)

HTPC is intended to use on a TV with a remote control (but you want to use a mouse)

I used to be able to use both mouse and remote (when gaming) for plex on my second monitor, so it WAS for my use with the windows plex app. Then they decided to remove it for no reason.

  1. Yes that’s a valid concern. The previous Plex Media Player had mouse support.
    The new Plex HTPC is meant to be keyboard & remote control. It terrific once you get used to the hotkeys. Don’t like them? Assign new ones and maybe macro one to add a dynamic normalizer for quiet listening at night.
  2. I’ve not seen any lag myself, not on any Mac I’ve used, 2016-2022. A few other have reported some lag entering the pre-play screen that was caused by a fat database and solved by repairing / reindexing it. Look for SLOW QUERIES in your log.
  3. Sorry about the clicks. At first I cared but then I realized that four arrows, Return, and ESC were pretty easy to master. After remembering X I was gtg.
  4. The output monitor is your Mac’s Primary, not extended display. I’m not aware of any way to change the display at the HTPC level. It may be possible.

In addition to point 2. In my experience I also noticed a laggy interface starting with versions after 1.20.2. There is also a forum thread discussing this => Home screen scrolling is not smooth on 1.21.1, but is better on 1.17.0

Slow loading of items, however (different issue) could be (partly) solved as nibbles described it.
