Is there a reason I can't remote control my plex server from android app?

I have PMS installed in linux and it works great otherwise, but I’m confused why there seems to be no way to use my android app to control playback on my pc plex server.

I’d like to be able use my phone or another plex web instance to play music on the plex server, is this not something that can be done?

I’ve tried the cast icon, but the only options are my google homes, I do not see my PMS instance

Plex DocumentationCasting, Flinging, & Remote Control
Overview

You can use the Plex Android mobile app to cast/fling content to other Plex clients.

Only certain Plex clients are supported. See Supported Plex Companion Apps.

If you want to fling media to your PC, you will need to use Plex HTPC (Download, Documentation). Neither Plex Web nor Plex Desktop can be a receiver.

The server is not a playback app. It only serves media to playback apps.

Alright, I get that, but it seems like a missed opportunity.

When I work from home I have to use a work laptop, but my sound system is connected to my pc which is my plex server. It would be great if I could have playback from there using the plex webapp remotely.

I’ve been doing this with airsonic for years and was hoping plex had a similar feature

Install Plex HTPC onto it and start it.

Thanks, HTPC does work for this use case, but I was still hoping it to be a background process.

Seeing as you want to play music on the server you try isntalling Plexamp on the server and login using the account with a Plex Pass. You should be able to find that instance of Plexamp when casting from your phone (could even be Plexamp on your phone) then your music could be streamed. It is very minimal so won’t necessarily fill your screen just to play your music.

Using Plexamp requires Plex Pass.
