Hi. I recently reorganized my movie extras. I originally had them in the same folder as the movie itself. This seemed to confuse PLEX. Recently, I created separate folders for each movie extra that I downloaded from my Blu-Ray collection. For any major movie extra, PLEX clearly seems to identify the metadata with the right artwork, etc. However, in my “Movie Extras” library that I created, I usually have 2 entries for each movie extra - the mkv and mp4 versions. For my full length movies, PLEX seemed to correctly group these movie formats.
By the way, yes, I know how to merge these formats, but I have a bunch of movie extras and it seems I shouldn’t have to do this manually.
Now that I’ve reorganized these folders to what appears to be the “right” way, PLEX doesn’t group these extras right.’
Is there a setting I can change or maybe a library refresh or something I can do? It would be great (and a real time saver) if PLEX would automatically link these movie extras (in mkv and mp4 format) together for me.
By the way, yes, I do think I have my folder correctly named with movie extra name and date, as well as the files underneath.
I think what I’m trying to do probably really isn’t a standard thing.
First of all, I’m calling these short videos “movie extras”, but really, they’re just movie shorts. An example would be the video short “Riley’s First Date?” from the movie “Inside Out”.
My preference (if possible) is to create whole movie library of these movie shorts. That way, I could create a playlist from them. My 3 year old loves some of these little short films (short attention span I suppose).
Anyway, I think I was told previously that if I include the movie shorts with the actual movie as you suggested, that you could not create a playlist from these short movies.
I did delete and reinstall my movie extras (or mostly movie shorts) earlier today. It did seem to correctly group together the mkv and mp4 format of these movies together this time. The names seem pretty messed up though and about 1/2 of them are named from the movie name (not the short film name).
Well, I’ll keep experimenting and see what I can come up with.
Thank you for the helpful feedback on this question. All feedback has been helpful to me. I’m quite a PLEX newbie, so I"m still learning as I go.
So far it seems PLEX is superb at standard movies, but I haven’t figured out how to get it to correctly categorize and group the other short videos found on blu ray rips.
Anyway, I did experiment a bit more the last few days. I have no great solution, but it did seem to help a bit to break up my movie shorts from my music videos. PLEX was lost on the music videos, but got most of the movie shorts. I read stuff on music videos, but nothing worked too well.
The good news is I only had about 50 or so shorts and another 40 or so videos, so I tweaked where I had to and renamed, etc. I’m in reasonable shape now.

If you have shorts that belong to a regular movie, IMHO it is best to include them with their ‘main’ movie.
See my solution for the extras from the ‘Inside Out’ BluRay:

Some ppl use a separate library for music videos (type: Home Videos)
Others do include them into their Premium Music library. This only works though if you have a music-only file for every music video in your collection.

is an excellent solution when you want to keep all of the associated extras with the movie, so that it somewhat resembles the blu-ray structure. But when you are trying to set up a play list for the little ones in your family, none of the extras are visible until you navigate to the movie, and you need to know there is a short there in the first place.
Even then, it’s impossible (as far as I know) to add one of the extras to a play list. That’s what @mcgogators was trying to do:
My preference (if possible) is to create whole movie library of these movie shorts. That way, I could create a playlist from them. My 3 year old loves some of these little short films (short attention span I suppose).
Adding the shorts from blu-ray rips into their own library gives you the ability to create a playlist, or you can just hit the “shuffle” button and let them play. As a bonus, even my three year old grandson can click his way thru a library of shorts.
Thanks OttoKerner and leelynds for the great follow up posts.
Yes, it seems the “standard” way to include movie extras is in the folder for the actual movie. My guess is that yes, PLEX would probably have an easier time identifying them this way.
However, I think leelynds has a good point in that what I"m trying to do is a bit different and create playlists specifically of these movie shorts. I understand if I add in “Rileys First Date-short.mkv” (or similar) that PLEX won’t let me make a playlist from these shorts this way.
Anyway, I’ll continue to experiment, but my ugly workaround method works OK for now. Thanks again for the feedback!
