I’ve recently added some of the Marvel movies and some of them have short films as added extras on the dvd/blu-ray 's.
How can I add or list the short films/movie files with the original movie it came with (eg. Main movie: Thor.m4v, Short Film: Marvel One Shot: The Consultant.m4v.) plus adding the short films poster & subtitles. Can it be done without causing any data issues with the Plex server reading the file directory? (Hope that makes sense…)
Yes, this is possible.
The movie with the extras must have a subfolder of its own.
See https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220677-Local-Media-Assets-Movies
Example:
First, you’d better look here:
Thor.m4v, Marvel One Shot The Consultant.m4v, simply won’t work at all. Movies need (YEAR) in the file name - and in the Folder that you’ll be using in a moment. Read on.
Then you’d better have another look here:
There are two ways you can do this - I’ll cover the method I use because I know it works. I use the ‘-tag’ method.
Here is:
Marvel One-Shot The Consultant (2011) at TMDB so we know the name is right at least:
Now, putting those two areas together we can do something like:
A Movie Library/
…Marvel One-Shot The Consultant (2011)/ <-- the Nest we can put all these things into - won’t work without this
…Marvel One-Shot The Consultant (2011).m4v <— semicolons are illegal so just leave those out
…A Mini-Doc About Underwear Consulting-short.m4v
…Underwear Bloobers-behindthescenes.m4v
…The Making of The Underwear Consultant-featurette.m4v
…The Marvel Underwear Consulting Trailer-trailer.m4v
etc,etc,etc
Also note: your movie probably has nothing to do with Underwear - I always try to bring some levity to the classroom.
Another thing to consider is those M4V files. MP4 and M4V files are the only files where an embedded and Bogus name in the Title Field really screws up a good match. The BEST thing to have in a Title Field is nothing, but just in case go here:
and move Local Media Assets to the bottom of the active agent lists by simply dragging and dropping. Leave it checked, just demote it. LMA does things you’ll need, like subtitles, local artwork, etc, so we want it on, we just don’t want it in charge. You’ll want to repeat this procedure for all Tabs in Movies and Shows.
FileBot will handle file naming for you instantly - link in my signature - but you will have to name Trailers and Extras by hand, most likely.
Thanks for the answers guys, has helped a lot. Does the same apply for TV Shows? Trying to add a DVD series into my iMac / Plex and having problems using the 01-05 The Ransom (season 01-episode 05 The Ransom) or should I just simply have season one, season two etc folders?
You’d better be prepared to capitulate completely to the Plex Handbook for TV Show naming and structuring because to do otherwise would be foolhardy - and won’t work:
Assuming this is the ‘Ransom’ in question:
http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=320546
A TV Show Library/ <— you can’t put TV Shows in a Movie Library - just so you know
…Ransom/
…Season 01/ <— there is only one season, so far, but there you go
…Ransom - S01E01.m4v <— I sure hope you’ve moved LMA to the bottom of the agent lists - can go badly, quickly
…Ransom - S01E02 - Grand Slam.m4v
…Ransom - S01E03 - Episode Name Optional.m4v
Thanks again, so helpful.
Next question…
I’m uploading the extended versions of the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and they’re part one + part two (disc 01 + disc 02) to have those properly organised do I do it like?..
/Plex/
/Movies/
/The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition (2001)/
…The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition (2001) - pt1.m4v
…The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition (2001) - pt2.m4v
…or another way?
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200264966-Naming-Stacked-or-Multi-Part-Movies
You obviously already found that page, but here’s something you didn’t know:
‘- Extended Edition’ isn’t part of that correct movie title and should be put in [Brackets] so Plex will ignore it, like this:
/Plex/
/Movies/
/The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) [Extended Edition]/ <–Edit: I fixed that
…The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) [Extended Edition] - pt1.m4v
…The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) [Extended Edition] - pt2.m4v
Here’s another little tid-bit. The way Plex handles Stacked Movies is fairly horrific. It’s a much better solution to just join them together. It only takes a few minutes and will ultimately prevent a fair amount of unnecessary pain and suffering:
Good advice on “Extended Edition” thanks, the app you suggested to merge the two parts together “mkvtoolnix” is there a Mac OS version or equivalent?
https://mkvtoolnix.download/downloads.html
I can’t help but notice when viewing the download page there seems to be a link to download a mac version. How, or if it works is a complete mystery to me because I don’t have a mac. You can report what you find out.
Ahh yes just seen it… will give it a go and let you know.
Got it! Downloaded it! Now trying to work it out LOL looking at the step-by-step in the PLEX forums link you sent. Getting a pretty good idea how to do it. Will give it a go and let you know how it goes. Do/can I add subtitles to this as well? Even though they’ll be two separate srt files? Do I add them along with the “Tracks, tags and attachments” section?
That will be a little trickier I think. @OttoKerner may have some tips.
If the subs are contained in the file they may get joined along with the movie (I kinda doubt that actually), but if they are they’ll be all out of whack. You’ll have to go to: https://subscene.com/ and find one for the entire movie. Hopefully the joining process doesn’t create an offset in the time of the movie that throws the subs out of whack for the ending.
Anyway, if you’re able to climb that mountain and/or end up with an SRT file:
The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) [Extended Edition].m4v
The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) [Extended Edition].lan.srt
(‘lan’ will be your language code - mine is eng)
that will be the end results that make it all work.
In this case it may be a good idea to use the Plex method for stacking IF the subs are contained in the file.
It should be possible to ‘append’ subtitles just like other track types.
Once you added the subtitle file for the first part, its entry in the upper window will have a context menu where you can append the file for the second part.
That’s what I thought at first, but won’t the subs for part 2 have a timecode that’s way different from it’s original part?

It is my understanding that the subtitle timecodes for part 2 get ‘shifted’ by the play duration of part 1.
I could be wrong of course. Bugs are always possible.
Well, that’s cool. I guess we’ll find out if @ajbishoponeill has embedded subs and get’s 'em joined.
The subtitles didn’t end up working for the extended/joined “The Fellowship of the Ring [Extended Version]” so just scrapped the whole idea and kept the file (which plays wonderfully.)
