Is there an alternative to Plex? Lost remote access

Moved to T-Mobile internet to save a bunch of money over cable and lost remote access to Plex. This is a big bummer. Is there a Plex like alternatives that has a way to get remote access?

There are a number of replacements, some better some worse, depending on exactly what you want. I suggest you do a search for “Plex alternatives” and then take your pick.

Recommending something here is less than optimal for the user.

Short of establishing a VPN connection to your home (which might require ISP co-operation for port forwarding just like Plex needs), I doubt any other Plex-alternative will handle remote access any better. Even if you implement a VPN tunnel, you can use Plex through that, so there’s not much of a point pursuing alternatives.

Plex even has a backup remote-access feature (Plex Relay) that I haven’t heard is available through anyone else.

I use Tailscale (which is free) and Jellyfin as a backup to my Plex and today I was glade I had it. Plex crashed and being in another state for work and no way able to restart my Plex Server App, I was able to turn on Tailscale on my phone (It’s always running on my server) and boom access to my Music (and all other aspects of my media).

Thank you. I will be exploring the submitted suggestions.

Trying Tailscale. Anyone know the appropriate Plex settings to allow Tailscale to circumvent the T-Mobile limitations?

Try the suggestions here or [HowTo] Use Plex with No Internet to make it accessible “offline” or without " Plex Authentication".
But (for me anyway) I find it a pain in the a** to have to keep flipping things around, which is why I suggest having Jellyfin running on the same server to not have to deal with changing around Plex settings. I know it sucks not top have the “synced” watch and such, but it does work well for me with Tailscale & Jellyfin (and my Kavita Comic Book Server) for use outside of my home network.

There shouldn’t be any special settings for Plex to work with Tailscale. I am currently using Tailscale to access my Plex server remotely.

Unlike traditional VPNs where you would open a port to connect to a server in your network, Tailscale establishes a connection FROM your network, so there are no ports that need to be opened. Tailscale uses Wireguard to establish a secure connection from your network.

can you bridge your T-mobile router and connect a router to it?

TMHI uses ipv6 & carrier grade nat, so any media server or other remotely accessed locally hosted services will all be affected.

As others have mentioned, you need something that can overcome or avoid the CGNAT entirely.

Other than changing your ISP again, If you have friends/family close enough, moving your server to their house is probably the very simplest method.

Otherwise, the VPN and vpn-like solutions are probably your best bet.

Well, I have Tailscale installed on both my server PC and my Iphone. Both show connected but the Iphone still cannot access the server. I saw Lon’s Youtube but the ISP probably doesn’t have the limitations as the T-Mobile. In the midst of trying Jellyfin but been with Plex for over 10-years and I also use PlexAmp so I really need a workaround.

FinAmp or FinTunes are available for Jellyfin Servers.
I like FinAmp’s look over FinTunes but I run Android and have no clue what iOS looks like. I am a huge fan of Symfonium but they are only Android (for now)

Forkboy, running Jellyfin now. I don’t have remote access. What is the trick to get remote access through tmobile wireless internet.

Forkboy, got it working after trying various things. It’s the combination Tallscale IP and Jellyfin port number. Thanks for your help.

Sorry I was at work, just got home. Glad you figured it out. Like I said, I still use my Plex but I do love having Jellyfin as a backup and just for unforeseen events. But Tailscale opens up so many possibilities (like my comic book server for my daughter in another town) and not having to deal with setting up a reverse proxy and certification.

For those with the T-Mobile like non-port forwarding capabilities here’s what I did: Install Tailscale on the server device and in my case an iPhone client device. Set “Manually specify public port” to port 32400 in Plex remote access. In Plex network under “Custom server access URLs” set the Tailscale assigned IP for the server device to (example): https://100.00.000.000. Do the aforementioned gave me remote access to my Plex libraries.

For Jellyfin there were no Jellyfin server settings required as long as the server device and remote client device are connected by Tailscale, then on the remote device It’s the combination Tallscale server device IP and Jellyfin port number.
