Is this a feature of Plex? What would I need to do to make this happen?

I just recently got into Plex (where have I been?!).
Anyway, I have my drives connected to a computer in the living room (the server). I have a couple Apple TV’s in the house, where I stream my content via the Plex app.
My question is, am I actually streaming through the internet - cos that would seem overkill.
Is there a way to simply stream through my network, since we’re all on the same WiFi network?
Thanks, all! Hope this post isn’t too elementary.

Plex will always establish a direct connection between your server and the clients. So if you’re in your own home network, no media will be streamed through the internet.

There’s been a number of reports where users had some odd home network setup that caused Plex server/clients not to see each other locally. In that case Plex tried to stream remotely. That in turn could result in indirect playback which is actually relayed through a server of Plex.
Again… that’s a lot of ifs. Default is it’ll stream locally

You can verify if your media is streaming locally on the “Now Playing” tiles of your Plex Media Server’s dashboard. When expanded, that tile will show if media is streamed…

  • local (=within your home network)
  • remote (=to a client outside your server’s home network)
  • indirect (=streams are relayed through a server of Plex)

Thank you, sir! I feel like such an old fart just getting into the whole Plex world.

So if I’m getting this right, is this correct?
Settings>PlexWeb>Quality>Internet Streaming>Video Quality… this will change the quality ONLY when streaming outside my home network?

That’s correct.
Most other client apps (e.g. for iOS/Android, big screen clients) have dedicated settings for home streaming, internet/remote streaming and mobile streaming (for mobile devices) to allow controlling if you want the media to be played at a lower size/quality. This can e.g. make sense if you have a limited internet upload bandwidth or a limited data plan on the applicable device.
