Just writing a post here so devs can see the issue. I had to roll back with APK mirror to 1.32.8.7639 to fix the issue and setup a new server.
Issue I got when trying to play anything remotely was ‘conversion failed, transcode exited due to an error’.
I uninstalled and reinstalled both the player and the media server only to realise it was since the server update. Found some similar problems among folks online and rolling it back fixed it.
Hopefully will get sorted in another patch and I’ll be sure to disable auto updates going forward.
I’m having major problems on my NVIDIA Shield Pro, too. Suddenly I’m unable to play most of my video files at all. The error message says unable to play this content - please check your connection. Server and player are both running on the Shield Pro. I can play all videos on my mobile phone in the Plex app, but when I try casting them to the Shield or a smart display (which have worked flawlessly before) I get an error message about transcoding. I’ve had to install Nova Media Player in order to watch my content, but hopefully Plex will fix this error soon. I believe the error started after I updated the PMS app on my Shield Pro yesterday. Please fix!

I thought it was my fault so I uninstalled Plex and Plex Media Server. Tried reinstalling but now I cannot get the Media Server set up again. It freezes on the message “Plex Media Server is starting for the first time, please wait…”
After a while my Nvidia shield just shuts down because there is no activity and than I can start all over again.
For anyone having the same issue I would not uninstall plex otherwise you might end up having to make a new server like I did. Got stuck on that starting screen too - “Plex Media Server is starting for the first time, please wait…”
In the end I got it to work by uninstalling plex media server and side-loading the earlier version with APK. That’s Plex Media Server 1.32.8.7639. you can side-load on shield with Jdownloader, it has a web browser. Just search plex media server APK mirror and pick the latest before 1.40.1.8251.
Presumably if I’d just done that without touching anything else I wouldn’t have needed to set up a new server.
Or perhaps just be patient and wait for them to release a hot fix.
Yup, same issue with my server. I can watch content on my phone, but when I try and watch on my Macbook via the web app I get ‘Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.’. Troubleshooted by restarting the laptop and Shield TV multiple times, but did not resolve. Then realised there had been an update which was likely the problem.
Will have to wait for a hot fix, which will hopefully be soon!
Edit: I should add that the media should be playable via direct play on my Macbook, so not sure why the transcoding error is even happening.
Transcoding also exiting with error on random movies & tv shows. Here is the debug log.

Update on the APK roll-back on PMS work-around, if you uninstall plex media server to then reinstall the earlier version you will need to reformat a new library.
I forgot to turn off auto-updates in the play store and had to make a new library again.
A case for just waiting for a hot fix if you have a big library with custom playlists or amended posters/etc.
