Edit: After more tests, i realized, the issue is actually not with Advanced filters, but with dropdowns all over the place. Therefore I renamed the topic. See posts below.
Original post:
Advanced filters is broken in Plex for Windows desktop application.
When trying to create Advanced Filters, none of the dropdowns work. So one can add rules, but one can not change the rules to anything different than Title searches.
And I just realize the problem is a bit different than I described in my first post. The dropdowns are actually opening. But the are opening outside the actual window and behind other open windows. This makes me think, it may be connected to the broken window size handling, discussed here:
and here:
In browser I do not have this issue. Only in desktop app.
Yes, I am aware. The reason is the same, my movie library is still a legacy library. I doubt, you will want to get me started on this topic in this thread, but you put some salt in the wound, so…
The reason is actually the plethora of bugs connected to the entire meta data handling. And as the update following my installed version sounded like it could start automatic, unwanted meta data refreshes, I am simply to afraid of doing an update.
To name a few of the issues:
My main problem: Covers tend do get changed during meta data refreshes. This is an absolute no-go for me. It’s a library of thousands of movies with carefully selected and manually retouched covers. And there is no way to even find out, if covers got changed unwantingly.
For the library update this is complete disaster. For Series I used huge (i mean really huge) screenshots of the entire list, which I then could pixel compare before and after. So I was at least able to repair. But it was only a tenth of the size of the movie library. For movies this approach is not feasible, unfortunately.
Lessons from series library update: It can loose meta data completely and assign a completely wrong title (yes, my series and movie naming scheme is completely in compliance with Plex’s needs, I assume this to result from internationally different titles and holes in scraping DBs). Again, for series my mega screenshot saved me, as I was quickly able to pin point such failures.
But there’s more to it: Since I updated the series library, the actors are messed up. There are the actors before and after the update. Many actors now exist twice. Unless I refresh metadata on older shows. But again, this is a no go, as long as the covers may get messed up in the process.
Now, from the few posts I have in here (and most of the ones I was following), I have little hope for getting any of these issues fixed. So, I didn’t even bother to post about it until now. If I ever want to update my Plex server again (and actually I want), I will need a serious amount of time (talking days, if not weeks), in order to prepare measures, all these issues can somehow be avoided, worked around and the damage done get fixed afterwards. So, yeah, my server is outdated. But unfortunately I have my reasons. And the reasons do not make me all to happy with the recent developments done to Plex Server or Player.
In between I was getting the issue with other dropdowns in Plex as well. After doing more test, I found, the problem healed itself after maximizing and returning to previous window size. Therefore, the topic should rather be called “Issue with dropdowns”. Not sure, I can rename it, though. Will try.
