Metadata stopped downloading for all libraries. (SOLVED)

Server Version#: 1.15.8.1163
Player Version#: 3.102.0
windows 10

PMS just stopped downloading metadata for everything. anime, tv, and movies. All libraries. it will add the name, and sometimes the date. thats it. for tv shows, it just titles it “episode 1, episode 2”. i did not do anything. i did not reboot. i did not install anything. it just STOPPED.

i have poked around in the settings.
i have turned on and off IPV6.
i have emptied trash.
i have turned off “empty trash automatically after every scan”
i have deleted the catch by deleting the folder where they are stored, and then restarting PMS.
i have optimized the database in hopes of fixing the issue.
i have upgraded PMS to a beta version just in the hopes that a newer version would fix the problem. no luck.
I have removed “local media assets” in the agents list just in case something suddenly changed.
I rebooted the pc and PMS. upon pc reboot it worked for about 1 day, then went back to not downloading metadata.
when i tell it to re download metadata, it just spins for 10 minutes before giving up.

if i tell it to fix match, and then pick some dummy listing, IT SEEMS TO FIND ALL THE CORRECT METADATA FOR THAT MATCH AND DOWNLOADS IT ALL (after 10 min), but then when i fix the match back, suddenly it has not idea what to do and removes all metadata (again, after 10 min).

when i tell it to fix match, it STRUGGLES to pull up the options. dont know if that is related.
SOMETIMES it will get an album cover. just 1 out of 10. but if i tell it to refresh metadata, or scan the whole library, it will loose the cover, and default to the grey film strip icon.

i have had this problem before, and it just seems to fix itself eventually. but its been over a week this time, and i am running out of patience.

Please help.

Plz help. im desperate.

omg someone please help. im upgrading hard drives today. maybe the fact that i have 20gb free has something to do with it? i dont know.

so i installed windows from scratch. transfered over my PMS, hooked it all up.
problem still continues. i have 300gb of free space, and metadata is just NOT UPDATING

Hardly any of your movie folders has the (year) in its name.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-movie-media-files/

2

Many of your movies are using the mp4/m4v container, which often has nonsensical metadata embedded.
Do the following to lower the ‘importance’ of these embedded meta tags for matching:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

3

In some of your folders there are .nfo files. If these contain an IMDb ID which doesn’t fit the movie, they can disturb the matching process severely.
Make sure you either have no .nfo files or they all contain the correct IMDb ID.
Make sure that a folder with several different movies in it doesn’t have a .nfo file

You can verify an IMDb ID by replacing the last part of this URL (after the last slash / ) and pasting it into your web browser’s address bar:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2283336

4

Never download or rip directly into a folder that has been added to a Plex library.
Always use a folder outside of Plex’s scope.
Only after a file is complete, verified as ‘intact’ and ‘playable’ and has been named according to the Plex guides, move it into your Plex library.

A RESPONSE! THANK GOD!
i will do all this and report back.
except…

#1 i will retitle all movies.
#2, i already did all that before reinstalling windows. i even unchecked the local media assets.
#3. i will delete all nfo files. those are all left overs from when i first started my plex server a year ago.
#4. never did that. i always use seperate folders and then move them over when done.
#5 brings us back to where we started.

none of these address the tv show issue. unless plex is just overwhelmed with not having movie dates. my tv shows do not have nfo titles in them.

i added daredevil yesterday. it found 1 album cover. but when i go to change it, its not in the posters window. its empty. and every episode is still “episode 1, episode 2 exc”

but i apreciate the responce. i will make all these changes and hope it works. if it does, i will report back. if it does not… i will also report back.

Alright.
so, bad news.
i renamed all 1110 movies to include the date. when i had it scan the folder, it removed all album covers as it re indexed everything.
i had to go in and try and add all the covers back, because all the metadata was still stored. but that was taking a very long time. and sometimes it would get hung up and struggle for 5 min to apply 1 change. also, it had been “scanning” every file indevidualy since yesterday like it was downloading metadata. but every single one it spent 10 min on. in 12 hours, it was still scanning things, and not adding album art.

so i said screw that. i removed the entire movie collection. had it scan the whole thing. all movies gone. then i emptied trash.
then i cleaned up bundles, and optimized database.

then i added 1 movie.

no metadata. no download. nothing.

so that addressed every possible problem you addressed.

im back to being stumped. any more ideas? right now in trying to reset plex media server defaults

i just did all this.
no changes

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 2 minutes
  6. either refresh one movie or add one movie into your library
  7. wait 3 minutes
  8. fetch log files and attach them here

i also reinstalled windows 2 days ago. brought over the PMS and managed to import it correctly. all data came with. but unfortunately the problem still persisted.

so, i fallowed these instructions.
#6, i added 1 movie that has never been indexed before.

here are the logs.

i really appreciate you helping me. i was going to tear this thing apart today.

got more logs.
so i changed the agents settings. i clicking on the gear and set it to pull movie info from the movie db instead of imdb.
it worked on that for 10 min. no results.
if thats any help. its easy to change back.

Your version of Windows 10 is not supported by Microsoft. (“Fall Creator’s Update” from 2017)
You should get yourself an ISO or USB image of a current edition.

When you brought over your old metadata, did you think of checking access permissions? If you copy data from a different Windows installation, chances are that those data are read-only for regular Windows users.
You must make sure that all files, folders and subfolders within the Plex data folder (in your case C:\Users\BeefGir\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\)
are fully accessible to your currently used Windows user account.

It looks like you still have cached metadata on your server, from earlier attempts.
It is best you empty those out:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/202967376-clearing-plugin-channel-agent-http-caches/

alright, i turned off PMS, went to the plex media server properties. sure enough it said read only. i unchecked that. then i also went in and cleared the catch.
then i started PMS back up, added a movie, and nothing changed. i went back to the folder properties and its back on read only.
but under security it says it has full permission. i see nothing preventing it.

as for the current windows, do you think thats an issue? the version i had when this all started going south was an official version. i grabbed another version when i upgraded to a bigger HDD, and tried getting plex working proper 2 days ago. finding another version at the moment would suck, but i will do it if you think its the only thing holding this all up. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-06-15_16-47-05.zip (1.8 MB)

im gonna click the un read only box wile pms is running. i can only guess when it created new folders after i deleted the catch made those new folders read only also.

What do you mean by that? I am not referring to the .exe

You need to reset the file access permissions of all files and folders.
Doing so will take quite a while. If done properly, it will re-enable ‘inheritance’ so that newly created files and folders have also proper permissions.
You cannot do this while Plex server is running!

Here is a graphical tool: http://lallouslab.net/2013/08/26/resetting-ntfs-files-permission-in-windows-graphical-utility/

I am not sure. It is better to use a supported image. Otherwise it may try to update itself as soon as it gets internet connectivity.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

i was just right clicking on the folder and going to properties. it had a read only check box. i unchecked it, and it took 20 min.
so i also downloaded and ran the utility you sent. it seems to be finished. i added a movie. no change.
so i guess i am updating windows now.

so, trying to upgrade put my computer into a boot loop.
originaly windows was taking about 2 hours to boot off a solid state drive. should not be a thing.
so i got this new windows and hdd and started fresh.
well, trying to upgrade, it sat on the boot menu for 30 min exactly, then told me that an error happened, and it could not go on. rebooting. it repeated twice before it tried to do boot repair.
when i tried to roll back to before the update, it said it was fucked.
so, here i sit with a new install of windows again, and i decided to just go ahead with a brand new plex server wile im at it. i had already said ■■■■ it to the rest of my metadata. start from scratch.

Except… problem persists.
SO WHAT THE ■■■■ COULD IT BE!?!? WHAT ON EARTH IS LEFT TO BE WRONG!?!? EVERYTHING IS BRAND NEW!!!
i turned off every virus protection and firewall i can think of.
SAME PROBLEM i turned off add blocker, JUST IN CASE! IM COMPLETELY VULNERABLE!

at this point, its nothing i could have done, because everything i did, is gone!
unless a plex update made it suddenly incompatible with the version of windows i was running… but no, that was a full version of windows. now im on pirated ■■■■ cause that old version of windows from 4 months ago was broken.

i have been at this for over a week.
i have lost everything. i have started from scratch so many times. what else is left?

i dont blame anyone for anything. i just dont understand why it just… stopped…

gonna try updating again

OH MY ■■■■■■■ GOD
it worked! IT WORKED!!! WINDOWS WAS THE ISSUE!!!
i got the latest version, and suddenly, IT ALL WORKS!!!

OTTOKERNEL THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING SO PATIENT WITH ME AND HELPING OUT! YOU ARE A GOD!
i hope this thread remains so someone with my same baffling problem can find help.
keep your stuff up to date

so, we have an update. after i got it working, it downloaded all metadata for the whole system over night. it was perfect. then i rebooted and the system killed itself. windows locked up, would not open any browsers. nothing worked. computer was dead again.

so being at the end of my rope, i paid for a new copy of windows. downloaded it from the source. updated it. got everything working. set up plex to download the metadata and index everything over night. it was a good day.

only to wake up to no album art. plex was STRUGGLING to get through stuff again. no art was being downloaded.
i have begin falling into despair as it has been trying to index stuff for a day now, and failing. i think im back in the same situation as before…
so this issue is not closed. it is reopen.

After a lot of metadata / media have been added or removed, you have to optimize your database.

Never try to update several libraries at once.
If you add media, only tell Plex to ‘Scan Library Files’ in the appropriate library, instead of all libraries at once.
