I’m currently using Plex combined with Rokus (Stream Stick Plus 3830EU) and a HD Homerun Quattro for the most part this setup works fine but unfortunately it’s not perfect.
I encountered two issues, the first being related to video.
Whilst our standard freeview channels video plays fine, our HD broadcasts seem to constantly get corrupted where the video will have green artifacts. I’m not sure as to the exact cause but I believe it’s because the video is 1080i rather than 1080p.
So far I work around this by disabling Allow Direct Play which causes the server to then transcode the media and it works fine. As part of this it shows it’s converting from 1080i to 1080p.
This issue didn’t happen on an older Roku (3920x).
The other issue I then have is audio as the audio would then direct play however resulting in no audio, this seems to be due to the “AAC_LATM” codec. Other media in just AAC is fine. My current workaround for this is setting the Roku to force stereo audio which triggers the server to transcode from AAC_LATM to AAC.
Unfortunately both of my workarounds mean that my server tries to transcode other content that normally plays directly perfectly fine (all my other content I pre convert to HEVC etc).
I’m interested in either trying to fix the issues that cause both of these codecs not to work properly on the Rokus. Or the other idea I had was trying to tell the server to force transcode Live TV & programs recorded by DVR. But not my other content.
An answer of “Buy an NVIDIA Shield” is not a solution, I have 3 TVs I set this up on and spending £400 on new hardware isn’t viable. Potentially another streaming stick of a cost of £50 each / £150 total would be viable. But the Rokus work perfectly for every other streaming platform we try and even for 4K HDR movies when direct play is enabled.
