Issue with Plex TV Series Agent metadata when TVDB ID is changed on TMDB

Hi,

I’m noticing an issue with certain shows and TVDB IDs not being synced with the metadata that Plex keeps. When using the Plex TV Series Agent, it seems that if a TVDB ID was changed on TMDB, then the system doesn’t update on Plex’s end, leaving the shows unmatched (Edit: I mean the episodes won’t match, within the shows. The shows may match fine, but the episodes within them do not).

Examples:

A Will of their Own (TV Series 1998-1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (TVDB ID changed on April 2nd).

Anatomy of a Scandal (TV Series 2022- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (April 8th)

Band of Gold (TV Series 1995-1997) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (April 2nd)

Cracow Monsters (TV Series 2022- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (March 12th)

Hillside (TV Series 1991-1993) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (January 6th)

M.I. High (TV Series 2007-2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (April 2nd)

Les Nouvelles Aventures des Robinson suisses (1998) - Watch TV Series Free Online - Plex (Had a bad ID and got stuck with a French(?) name and can’t be matched.)

The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson (TV Series 1998-1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (May 11th)

The Adventures of Swiss Family Robinson (TV Series 1998-1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (No history listing for a TVDB ID change, but it probably had one.)

The Nightmare Worlds of H.G. Wells (TV Series 2016-2016) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (March 21st)

It seems to be a recurring problem. The system doesn’t seem to pull TVDB ID changes, then on the user side, the shows can only be matched if you choose TMDB ordering.

Thank you.

What does this mean? Were these shows previously matched, and they’ve become unmatched?

How are they named on your system?

I looked at one: Band of Gold. It seems to have both the old and new TVDB IDs linked.

guid="plex://show/5d9c07fa4eefaa001f5d2824"
<Guid id="imdb://tt0111890"/>
<Guid id="tmdb://9091"/>
<Guid id="tvdb://85115"/> (old TMDB -> TVDB link)
<Guid id="tvdb://71552"/> (new TMDB -> TVDB link)

They are named properly, including folders containing TVDB IDs.

This is on an install of Plex that I did maybe a month ago. They were not matched previously, with the old install of it that I had. I carried nothing over.

I should have specified and this is on me. I mean the episodes are unmatched. The shows probably match fine, but the episodes don’t match on TVDB ordering. I’ll correct my original post. I thought when I said ordering it covered it, but I wasn’t clear.

Current or old TVDB IDs? :stuck_out_tongue:

What does that mean?

Looking at Band of Gold, I see that Episode orderingThe Movie Database gets episode titles & summaries & etc.

But Episode orderingTheTVDB (any) doesn’t get any episode-level metadata.

I agree with you that something is wrong, that the old TVDB ID is still present but shouldn’t be, and I wonder if that’s preventing Plex from populating the TheTVDB episode ordering & metadata.

Do you have any sense of why these have all changed - were they duplicates?

I have the correct TVDB IDs. I have 7000 shows in the system, all perfectly named and ID’d. I use Sonarr and keep everything in it, so if an ID gets removed, I know immediately and can correct it.

I explained in the original post that TMDB works and what I mean by episodes unmatched is that they are considered unmatched within Plex. Filter down to episodes, show unmatched, they are there.

Like you, I’m assuming it can’t pick up on the replaced TVDB ID when it comes to the episode level. It can match the show to it, but it doesn’t seem to change it out on Plex’s side for the new episode IDs, so the episodes get no metadata at all. No old IDs, no new IDs. There are no fields filled in. I’ll just add this as an edit, but it might keep the old episodes in the system, their IDs, so it calls for the info, nothing there, leaves it unmatched, moves on.

The TVDB IDs changed because they were duplicates, without a doubt. There are a fair amount of duplicates on both TVDB and TMDB, but most get picked up on fairly early on. Some sit in the system for many years. Eventually they get reported and someone nukes the newest one, usually. Then IDs and other info may have to be updated elsewhere.

In this case Plex is pulling the TMDB listing just fine, but ending up stuck with both IDs and it seems to not be able to shift to using the new one fully. It can match the show and pull down the basic info just for the show, but it stops at that.

:bangbang:
Bruce Springsteen had a song about that, I think. Sure explains why you’ve encountered this multiple times.

Thanks for explaining. I agree.

It’s interesting that Plex’s consolidated metadata includes both the old/deleted and new TVDB IDs.

It is. This is why I am reporting it. I figured something along those lines was going on and it was growing as duplicate items were being found on TVDB. The proper move would be to flush anything related to the old ID and then pull the information from TVDB with the new ID.

With them both sitting in the system, it appears it just sits on the original and does nothing of use, besides linking it to the main show. Sort of like it is an alternate title. You find the show, but then you end up with no episodes.

Perhaps they can fix it so it doesn’t do it for any shows.
