Issue with recording schedules "New and Repeat" Shows

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.81.1

Since updating to the new Server Version my guide and recordings appear to be incorrect.
Firstly, the Grid Guide will show that a show is set to record a repeat even though it is only set to recording “New” episodes. This is not a huge problem at this stage, rather an annoyance.

The second issue I see (potentially related) there are some shows that should be recording every episode (new or repeat) and show in the Grid Guide they are set to record but in the Recordings they do not show up and they do not record either. I’ve tried deleting and re-adding the recording but the same issue occurs.

Anyone else having this issue?

What do your Plex Media Server logs says about the shows set to record that are not showing in the Recordings?

Firstly, the Grid Guide will show that a show is set to record a repeat even though it is only set to recording “New” episodes.

Yes, I see this one all the time. Grid Guide seems crazy happy to show it will record every possible episode, regardless if I select “New Only” This is not unique to the newest server version. It has been a bug for a while.

show in the Grid Guide they are set to record but in the Recordings they do not show up

I see this too at times. If you have already recorded the episode, having it in an existing library, or watched and deleted then I think the Guide still shows it as planning to record, but the DVR is “smart” and will not re-record the episode.

Basically, you cannot trust the grid guide for accurate representation of upcoming recordings. You have to focus on the recordings screen solely for this info. I’m personally reluctant to criticize the grid guide; it took forever to arrive and still is not available on many clients.

Thanks for your replies.
After looking further into it I found that it was only one particular show that was not recording at all.
Sorry for my late reply as I’ve been waiting for that particular show to come up again so I can see the log. It only just started playing again (due to Christmas/New Years change in schedule).
It’s recording all episodes now without issue. So it must’ve been some kind of show/plex connection issue on that particular guide download?

The Grid Guide is still showing that it will record repeats (even though its not set to and it doesn’t actually record) but, as you’ve said this is an already known issue with the Grid Guide so I guess we just have to wait to see if they fix the bug in future updates.

The Grid Guide showing a series recording is only meant to indicate you have the series set to record, not that it will actually record each episode it showing the recording indicator. The Recording Schedule is where you would check to verify what shows are actually going to record. Perhaps in the future Plex will modify the logic to include only displaying the recording indicator for episodes that are scheduled to record but I have heard of no such plans.

Thanks for clearing that up John I now understand the logic behind it.
It just seems that when someone sees a particular show/episode has the record icon one would naturally assume that that indicates that is going to record. Not that it may or may not record depending on what settings you have setup.

Anyway, that’s just my 2 cents.

Wow, I could not conceive of any defense for this bug, but you get the “nice try” award! The grid guide is a giant timeline of the future. There is no excuse for showing RED dots next to items that the DVR never intends to record. I can understand that it is a low priority bug, and possibly a difficult bug to fix. But it is a BUG! (maybe just change the color away from RED on non-recordings?)

The Grid Guide is using the same logic for displaying Series Recordings as the Original Guide Design. For example: looking at the Discover guide on my system I see that in the Upcoming Shows area I have a series recording setup for Rizzoli & Isles.

There are 4 upcoming episode scheduled to air which are shown below:

Looking at the Recording Schedule for 1/6 and 1/13 none of the episodes are showing as being scheduled to record because I already have those episodes:
2019-01-05_16-07-00 2019-01-05_16-07-20

Now you can say feel that this is a bug, but it is functioning as the guide system was originally designed, to show users that they had a recording established for the show. Since the guide is working as it was originally designed can it be called a bug? Is it how most users would prefer it, possibly not. If it is not how you would like to see it designed then I would suggest perhaps heading over to the Feature Request area of the forum and verifying if a Feature Request already exists to only show the recording icon on shows that are scheduled to be recorded. If one doesn’t exist then create a new Feature Request for this design change you desire.

I’m not sure what the point of those screen shots is? This is not a problem with the old Discover Guide. It is a bug with the new grid guide. For example, here is my “Pawn Stars” subscription, New Episodes only:
falserecordplanbug1

But here is what the guide shows for an episode tonight that is a repeat:
falserecordplanbug2

This erroneous Grid Guide view will mislead any user who has used a DVR in the last 10 years into thinking that “Pawn Stars” will be recorded tonight at 6:30PM on CW.

That’s a UI bug. Plex can fix it by NOT showing a RED RECORD symbol at all. Or by changing the icon so that we know Plex is “aware” of the Pawn Stars series, but does not plan to record it. But the UI as designed now has a bug.

DrSmith, John is just trying to make us understand the logic behind it which I think we both do. It’s just that the logic behind it doesn’t make sense to an ‘average’ user. A UI should be intuitive to a user, this is not.

Yes, indeed a DiscoverGuide feature has led to a GridGuide bug. But the history of the bug is for UI developers to ponder. We users just want a UI that makes sense for the non-techie rest of the family. When I tell my spouse that it’s not going to record even though it has red dots beside she looks at me like I have two heads.

Like I said earlier if you don’t like how the Grid guide works then head over to the Feature Request area on the forum, search to see if there is a Feature Request to not display the record icon if a show will not record and if one exists add your vote for it. If one doesn’t exist then create a Feature Request.
