Issue with the new collection feature

Hi guys!

Apparently with the last Plex-update a new collection feature has been introduced which groups all movies from a series into one entry. A pretty neat feature which basically works BUT I still can see the other movies which have been grouped in the archive. So for example if I group the Harry Potter Movies 1-7, I have one entry with all the movies grouped in one entry but the other Harry Potter Movies 1-7 just stay visible in my library. Why is that ? And how can I make them dissapear so that I just see the grouped one ?

Cheers

Wow! Didn’t notice that „hide other items“-option. Exacty what I was looking for! Thanks so much! :slight_smile:

On the opposite note of this, is there a way to not show the collection when I’m viewing my movies by title? If I want to see the collection, I feel like there should be a separate tab or something for just viewing collections, much like Emby has. It’s really the only feature from Emby that I miss.

The help page claims I should be able to do this, but my context menu does not have the same options as this page claims (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201273953-collections/)

there is…
you can “disable” (inline) collections in the advanced library settings. in this case you will still be able to access the dedicated “collections” view which shows nothing BUT collections.
This is all described in the article posted by Otto above (accepted answer).

Disabling inline collections

Collection View

@Scrapbookee:
what version of Plex do you have installed on your server?
you need at least PMS 1.11.0 – if you’re on 1.11, you need to use the online version of Plex Web (https://app.plex.tv/desktop)! Only Plex 1.12.0 (currently still in beta!) bundles the version of Plex Web capable of displaying inline collections!!

@tom80H

Updated to Plex media server v 1.12.0 today, and now I can see collections. Now to manually change all the images to the TVDB image, rather than this madness that Plex does. Thanks!

Also, you misunderstood my issue with disabling the collection in movie view. What I want is when I am looking at my movies, I DON’T want to see the collection and the movies that go in it. I want them to be tagged in the collection, but ONLY show the movies.

Maybe that’s a weird request. If it’s not possible, I will just have to accept that :slight_smile: I just feel that if I want to look at collections, then I’ll look at collections, but when I want to look at my movie library, I want to see all the movies.

that’s exactly what changing the “Collections” option in the advanced library settings will do for you… if you “disable” it, this will not prevent you from using collections… it’ll just disable collections from showing in line with your movies. you can still switch to the collections view or see related items in the pre-play screen.

@tom80H

Sorry, I was confused by the settings. Thank you for this. I feel like “disable” makes it sound like it disables collections completely, or maybe I am just odd that it reads like that.

Thank you for the help! Now to continue fixing the images for collections. Really wish Plex would just auto-grab from The Movie Database rather than create it’s own poster. Oh well, it’ll take a while to do one by one but it’ll eventually be worth it!

Thanks again!

The EXTREME ambiguousness of that menu item is quite normal for Plex. Maybe they will fix it maybe they won’t but either way Plex probably thinks it is perfectly clear as they know what they meant to say.

It is like in another part of collection feature where you must have “Allow deletion” (which means delete files from disk) enabled in order to enable deletion of collections. (Which does not delete the collection’s content from disk) It “should” be separate settings and “should” indicate that deleting a collection does not delete its content from disk. Also “allow deletion” should NOT need to be checked in order to delete a collection. After all you can delete an entire library without enabling “Allow deletion.”

Plex just does not have a diverse enough and/or a large enough alpha testing group to catch that kind of error before it hits the real world and they usually do not allow things to stew in their larger beta testing group (Plex Pass users) long enough for things like this to get caught. Or, often they simply ignore the feedback they get from the Plex Pass users here as they do not believe we are at all representative of “real users.”

I have filed a suggestion to change the wording. It makes sense to state this more precisely.

This is simply a bug in the web app which will get fixed.
Having to enable ‘Allow deletion’ is just a workaround for this bug.

Regarding the must have “Allow media deletion” requirement…

Generally, I try not to let the little things choke me up, but this one just sticks in my throat. I don’t use the delete function from within Plex, preferring to do things the old fashioned way removing files from the hard drive. It annoys me to no end when I see the option to delete a file in any of the apps because I have forgotten to re-set the option after editing a “Collection”

Since we know it’s just a bug, not an actual requirement, let’s hope that fixing it gets bumped up in the priority list.
