Issues Playing MP4 Files

Whenever I watch a movie (720p or 1080p) in MP4 format, inevitably at some point it stops buffering and the movie freezes. When it happens I can still back out to the library and browse as usual (except covers don't load for the coverflow on the main library menu), but unless I restart the ATV, none of the media loads when I attempt to play it.

Although it did happen once, this doesn't seem to be an issue when I watch TV shows in MP4 format, so I'm not sure what to make of that.

Plays MKV and AVI flawlessly; never freezes. It seems when the transcoder is in effect, it bypasses what ever is causing these issues. I was hoping this latest ATV update might resolve these issues, but apparently not.

Anyone else having the same experience? Any ideas? Anyone??

What model ATV are you using?

Sounds like it is running out of Memory within the ATV.

Didn’t you already post this here:

Also when this happens the “buffer lock” if you hold the menu button while it’s at the buffer stage on your aTV what happens just out of curiosity.

ATV3 A1469

Yes, but I've never experienced the BSOD as you have. You also mention that you only have problems with 1080p movies, while the issues I'm having seem to be because of the duration/size of MP4 file and not the resolution. Also, you never mention having coverflow issues with the main library menu after 'buffer lock.' Factoring all that in, I figured it would be appropriate to start a new thread for those who's experience was more like mine.

Kicks me out to ATV main screen as it normally would.

Also If I just hit menu a few times to exit the hijacked app to view a different app all the flow and icons are blank (black) until I restart my aTV again

When this happens how do your other non hijacked apps act? Do they load the "coverart/posters"? May not be the same exact issue but has a few similarities. I wanna pull the trigger and goto iOS 8 but these issues related or not keep me from updating.

Also I don't get a bsod when I hold menu during the "buffer lock" until I start trying to navigate the aTV home screen, my apologies for not being clear on that. Just trying to get to the bottom of these issues. They are driving me insane.

I'm not sure. I'm attempting to recreate the 'buffer lock' as we speak so I can accurately answer that. The coverflow issues I mention in my original post are only in reference to the coverflow of the main library menu in Plex. Will update this post when I'm more able to accurately answer your question.

I am having similar issues. I have the Apple TV 3rd Gen Rev A on the latest firmware. My plexconnect and PMS are on a Windows Vista computer. The Apple TV is connected using ethernet. For me it’s both movies and tv shows. Mine are m4v that seem to have a problem. The issue is random, it can occur at the beginning, the middle or towards the end of the video. My transcoder setting is usually Directplay since nearly all my videos are configured for itunes. All my videos are tagged using MetaX. When the freezing occurs I can browse the movies but all appear to be buffering and picture never shows. If I try other apps like Vevo and Youtube they won’t play videos as well even itunes homesharing. The only remedy is restarting the Apple TV. Funny I can play music in my iTunes Match when the videos are frozen. The same videos never freeze if I use the iphone plex app to Airplay. They seem to buffer quickly using the iphone or ipad Plex app. Another thing I noticed is if I play the same videos using iTunes homesharing there is no freezing and again the video quickly loads and within a few minutes the whole video is on the Apple TV. The issue is occurring too frequently to degrade my viewing experience.I am trying to create a log right now for posting. Thanks for the hard work guys.

This is why I went back to iOS 7. Haven't seen the issue since.

Just confirmed that non hijacked apps also fail to load 'coverart.' Also, screensaver is just a black screen. I'm assuming the images are failing to load from the Flickr album I have it set to.

Tried switching DNS back to 'automatic' on ATV with no results :(

Outside this one issue, Plex and PlexConnect function too flawlessly to let it drive me crazy :) Maybe a little annoying, but I can deal with the minor inconvenience of having to restart my ATV during some movies until the devs figure it out ;)

As Walhman has stated this sounds like an issue beyond Plexconnect.

So, because the cause of this issue has eluded me, I decided to run a sort of 'Hail Mary' play today and swap out the router I've been using. Been testing all day (and will continue to, of course) and thus far, it seems to have solved the problem. Too soon to say if this worked, but I am cautiously optimistic.

Well, I guess yesterday was a fluke... issues persist :( Now this is really starting to frustrate me >__<

This is what happened when apple released iOS 8 for aTV 3’s:
