iOS 8 Black screen of death

I’m having a very strange issue since updating to iOS 8 using iBaa’s github using the latest commit. When I play playlists they play fine no issues (not including the file in question, yet). I’m now just trying to play movies from the library tab and for some reason while I’m playing a movie that’s a .mp4 1080p it will play for a while then it will seem as if it’s buffering even though it’s on my PMS, so I exit the app then my aTV goes to a locked black screen of death (bsod) with no response whatsoever from any remote. The only way to fix it is to restart by a power cycle (unplug the power cord) or hold pause/play until the aTV light flashes quickly using my silver aTV remote to restart my aTV. On previous iOS versions I didn’t have this issue whatsoever using previous commits. I’m guessing it’s a PlexConnect issue as the playlists work fine without this locked bsod error i’m facing. I’m going to try to add the movie in question to a playlist and attempt to play a few more 1080p movies and see if the issue persists. If I do I with attach some logs set to loglevel = High.

Has anyone else seen this issue, or is there a topic already in the forums? I attempted to find a similar topic/issue but couldn’t find it unless I missed it.

Looks like apple was adding a channel fx now, maybe it was the issue still testing…

Same issue on same movie and other 1080p movies in playlist tab also. So it’s either apple updating the new fx now channel, iOS 8, PlexConnect, the movie itself, or something else . Awesome trying to figure this one out to many things to rule out. I hate debugging!

Seems to happen when I hit pause. It stops buffering the movie from that point forward then it acts if it’s attempting to buffer with a spinning wheel in the progress bar then when I hold menu to get out of the hijacked app it then locks my aTV when I try to navigate the aTV home screen and goes to a bsod. Also If I just hit menu a few times to exit the hijacked app to view a different app all the flow and icons are blank (black) until I restart my aTV again. PlexConnect issue or iOS 8? I’ll post logs in a few hours when I get a chance.

If I don’t use PlexConnect on a hijacked app the official unhijacked apps all work fine flow, all the icons populate etc until I use PlexConnect and play a 1080p movie and it reaches a buffer stage on my own pms server on the same network. I belive I have narrowed it down to PlexConnect as the culprit I’m just not sure what in the code may be causing the issue for 1080p movies to crash iOS 8 like this depending on how you exit or the app or hold the menu button to reach the bsod.

loglevel = High sent to @baa via pm.

Edit - tested iOS 7.1.2 and it doesn’t have this issue at all in my experience. The issue is with iOS 8 not PlexConnect from what I can tell. Unfortunately apple stopped signing iOS 7.1.2 on aTV 3’s on sept 26 so if your on it your stuck unless apple fixes it or someone finds a workaround for PlexConnect or a newer iOS fixes this 1080p “buffer lock” bug.

aTV Firmware signing status

Had this problem last night. Didn’t have to power cycle. Atv restarted itself after a while. But was def and alarming experience. Ios8 is really buggy. Navigation isn’t as smooth. Menu isn’t responsive. Needs an update.

This is NOT iOS8 specific, it happened to me 2 times in last month on iOS6.2 (or whatever the latest iOS version was before ATV iOS7/8 update).

I have iOS 6.2 on ATV3 running latest synced Plexconnect, It happened to me also twice.

Running iOS 7.0 on ATV3 with the latest PlexConnect and I'm having the same issues. I don't get the BSOD though. Movie just freezes and when I back out, the cover flow doesn't populate anymore and the movie won't resume playing until after I restart my ATV. Also, this seems to happen whether I pause the movie or not.

Guess it's 720p for me until the amazing PlexConnect devs figure it out -__-

And how would they fix it without our help. Turn on debug log and post the results since you can reproduce the error.

I'm unable to reproduce the error at will... it seems to be random, and getting worse since my last post. I basically have to restart my ATV at least once every time I watch a movie now :( Also, I've noticed there aren't any issues when I watch files that aren't mp4. Maybe a problem with the Direct Play?? IDK...

I'll set log level to high next time I watch a movie and if I have any problems, I will post.

This happened to me last night. What’s the preferred method for pulling video information that’ll help debug the issue?

Well, it happened while my debug level was set to high, so I will post:

PlexConnect.log (1.15 MB)

Movie froze at time stamp 17:39:45 or line 16,350, just for clarification.

Hopefully this is helpful in some way and these issues will be resolved soon :)

In theory this should not be a PlexConnect issue as once the movie is playing it is not really involved any more.

I notice that you are not on the elatest iOS, can you update and see if it makes a difference please (7.01 brings 'stability and bug fixes').

I've updated to iOS 7.0.1 (6912) and the issues persist. I'm 99% sure this is not a PlexConnect issue now. After hours of reading through Apple's forums, it's obvious that these latest updates have caused more issues than they've fixed and it's just a matter of waiting for Apple to fix these broken updates before these issues will be resolved, unfortunately :(

I would try putting the ATV in DFU mode and then effectively doing a clean install, sometimes that can get rid of weird issues like this if it is an iOS issue; also it gives you a chance to cache a PlexConnect logo to replace the trailers one if you have the energy to do that trick ;)

At this point, I'm willing to try anything. What is DFU mode and how do I put my ATV into it? And do you mean a 'Restore' when you say clean install?

Yeah it will be a 'restore' but should wipe everything that was previously there.

Is restoring in DFU mode different from a normal restore? Because I just did a full restore a couple days ago in hopes it might help, with no luck.

Same problem here on my ATV 3 with 7.0.1!

It’s freezing through playing a movie by stoping puffering. This ocures only in plex connect but not in netflix nor itunes. But i can still navigate throgh the menue and have to reboot the atv from the settings menu.

Edit: I beliefe that i can see this effect since i activated fanart on my atv so i will it deactivate it and report the results. Why I’ve this theory? I imagine that the fanart is still remaining in the ram and will block the space so you get a overflow.

First report of the last test:

1. I deactivated fanart.

2. I reboot my ATV.

3. I started a movie which stuck yesterday.

Result: The movie run without any issue but one test means nothing so i will still monitor it. If the event happen will not show up again over the next day i will give a feedback, too.

As you say it would be interesting to see what happens after running a while.

Are you running the vanilla PlexConnect code or using a fork and/or any helper apps?

I run the plex connect version for synology by bwynants. And please, don’t ask me to do some strange things with a command line cause i’ve no idea about those issues.

Report: After deactivating fanart i had no event anymore yet. This is hartening my theory about an memory issue with the fanart but i will still monitoring.

Maybe will someone with this issue do my test proceture, too. So we can see faster if there is a link between fanart and our problem.

I've had these issues before I activated the Fanart feature. 99.9% sure these issues are because of recent Apple updates.
