iTunes - moving its library to the NAS where Plex is running?!

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 4.12.3

Hi all.
I was wondering if I could improve my music library positioning and would like to have your feedback/suggestions on this.

The actual situation
I have iTunes running on my MacBook Pro with a local library (on the MacBook itself). I do synchronize the whole library with rsync from my MBP over to my Synology NAS, in the /music folder.
From there, Plex will read all the albums/artists/songs and I am happy streaming from my Android device when I’m in my car.

Trigger
As I will slowly convert to digital all my CDs, I know that my MBP’s SSD will be full in a matter of hours. I want to avoid this, so I thought of moving iTunes’ library away from my MBP and over to the Synology NAS. According to various instructions found on the net, it is possible to tell iTunes to look for its library on the network.

Final goal
Is it possible to have the iTunes library on the Synology NAS and at the same time Plex (which runs on the same NAS) use it as well?
This way I wouldn’t need anymore to sync from my MBP with rsync and all the music would be consolidated in one place.

Thanks for your help/suggestions!

The MacBook can always mount the shared folders on the Synology.

If you push music files to there, where PMS on the Synology is also looking for them, Plex will also be able to index and play those files.

You can export playlists and import them into Plex but not iTunes itself. (proprietary)

Hi Chuck, thanks for your reply.
I do have the possibility to set up an “iTunes Server” on my Synology NAS (it’s an app which can be installed). Do you think I should use that, or should I simply move the actual library over and connect to it via AFS/SMB share from my MacBook’s iTunes?

Hi trumpy81
As far as my actual setup looks like, I have no issues with file naming and organization. The iTunes files/folders structure looks like this:

Folder “Artist”
Subfolder “Album”
Files named “01 Track1”, “02 Track2” and so on

I use rsync to sync stuff over to my NAS, into the /music folder. There, the structure remains exactly the same. My Plex is not having issue at all: I see the artists and albums (and, of course, tracks) and can play them back . Which issues were you thinking of?

And also: in iTunes I have only music, no movies nor TV shows.

I’m actually not using DSM Video nor DSM Audio… I might somewhen use Photo-something, but that’s beyond the scope of this thread here.
I think I’ll be good - I’ll report back when (successfully) finished migrating my music away from my MBP and over to my NAS/Plex.

Thanks. Can you detail a bit more? I mean: basically those are simply “shared folders”, aren’t they?
Or what is Synology doing with/to them?

OK, I will.
