I've given up on Plex

Hi all,
Happy New Year to all of you.

I’m a recent free Plex user.

I’m sorry for this downer post but I’ve given up on Plex :frowning:

I so wanted to buy a subscription but the product just annoys me so much.

I have tried to make it do what I needed it to do & for the most part it was fine.

However I can’t get by the fact that some things it does or doesn’t do has me so frustrated.

I can list all here but only if this gets posted & I’m sure others have had issues like mine too.

I’m not mad or upset as I was using it for free but I am very disheartened by the whole thing in the end.

Plex is wonderful & puts a great look on your files etc. but it needs a bit more work IMHO.

Thanks & Regards,
Declan.

Sorry that PLex didn’t work out for you.

As is the case with so many “farewells” like this, not a single post about the problems you were encountering; just this.

Hi dduke2104,
I did say I would list them if my first message got posted.

It looks like it did.

Thanks,

Why would it not be posted?

Anyway, I can imagine that your issues with Plex have already been described in other threads, so I simply wish you luck with whatever other solution you decide to use.

All the best.

Hi JCHH,
I read the blurb about posting so that was my response in case I said something.

ISSUES:

1 - Not remembering images & date info for a particular series despite NUMEROUS times changing it again & again.

2 - New show added & now that show image becomes the show image of the show mwntioned above, again, despite NUMEROUS times changing it.

3 - Back & forth, back & forth.

4 - New show called ‘Full Custom Garage’ with two seasons & I d/led the series image. It shows up as ‘Full Garage’.

I could go on & I will.

I have pulled entire series of shows from Plex & did the dance & then added them back in to no prevail.

I have done the above NUMEROUS (I know it’s getting old now) times but eventually gave up & added the info myself.

Just to note for the above is that I edit most of my files in ‘MKVToolNix GUI’ if that makes a difference?

I don’t think it should?

I follow all the naming conventions Plex wants & add my own custom photo to the directory of the series etc.

I don’t know.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong as I’m all out of ideas right now.

Thanks for any help,
Declan.

As you have already decided to leave, I am not going to invest any time trying to help with the problems you had.

As I wrote above, I simply wish you luck with whatever (non Plex) solution you decide to use,

declan_dorney_gmail_com,
Most times issues with plex not picking up a show correctly is the naming of the root folder for the show or the episodes themselves. I would recommend using another package such as sonarr for tv shows and radarr for movies. You do not have to use them for downloading purposes you can just use them to do your shows naming conventions.
Basically you can add the show in sonar then sonarr will create the folder with the proper naming convetion and then move you files into it. Once the files are in the directory structure you can even have sonarr rename the video files for you as well. It is great for automation. I have over 800 TV shows that I manage with sonarr for the family and it works perfectly with Plex.
I have been managing media for almost 10 years now and Plex has been for me at least the best out there. It is time consuming to manage your files properly. But if you do Voila!! set it and forget it…
I would send some links for the apps I recommended but I don’t know how plex would respond to that. Just do a google or bing search and it should get you started.

Oh I forgot to add once folders/shows have been renamed you will need to rescan your library in Plex.

Hi all,
I have gone back to Plex because I do like it & it owes me nothing at all.

Thank you PlexJon for yuor help & info.

I didn’t know about sonarr but will certainly give it a look up.

Thanks you too JCHH.

I will keep you up to date

Emby Sucked - that’s the only reason I’m still here…

I am frustrated pluxology.

It wasn’t two hours, it was a week or so.

I explained myself & why I went back so there is nothing else to it.

Plex is still working as expected ie: flakey on some things.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong in the settings to make it look at my local files instead of the internet?

I’m not trying to annoy anyone, I was just looking for some advice & answers.

Thanks,

Come on it’s New years  I know how frustrating it is trying to organize media. You can get pretty ticked off. Especially if you are relatively new and don’t understand the concept of how the naming works. He will probably have to recreate his library if he has already made a lot of manual entries for shows. If he has already done that no matter what he does it may not pick up the show correctly. Let’s try and be constructive, trust me the first time i setup plex it was overwhelming and I have been a software developer for over 20 years

declan_dorney_gmail_com,
Once again if plex is flakey you need to give us some examples of how. Most likely it is a configuration issue. Don’t be so vague or people will just think you are some keyboard warrior poking at Plex and wont take you serious.
I will be happy to try and help along with many other users here in the forums.

I changed my name here.

PlexJon,
I’m NOT a kb warrior & I don’t hate Plex.

I gave examples of whjat is happening.

I can be mush more specific if you want.

Thanks,

Sorry for my typos

Well post them up. You will be surprised if you are cordial and post properly people will respond. But just saying ie: flaky on some things some people will just ignore you. Some of us here take it personal. many of us have spent a lot of time trying to help users/developers make this a great product. Good feedback is the key to developing great software.

PlexJon,
I’m a middle aged man with no desire to be a kb warrior.

Any help you could give would be most appreciated.

I think I’m always cordial & friendly to most people.

Anyway I will post the specific things that I’m having an isue with after this post.

Thanks,

Plex retrieves tv info from the TV DB, so if/when metadata is wrong, that is where it generally comes from and must be corrected at.

If you do not want plex to provide metadata, then you must change the agent or library type to something that doesn’t use online metadata sources.

it your tv library and change the agent to ‘personal media shows’ then it should use your local art etc, but you won’t get any online metadata (like show/epsidoe summaries, reviews, ratings etc)

image

if it is just a single show you are having problems with, check the tvdb, and make sure that it has the show, then you can ‘fix match’ in plex to find the show to match.

once it is matched, it will use that tvdb info, images etc.

if you simply do not like the info etc that tvdb provides, you can change your own, but you must ensure the LOCK is enabled (ie yellow/orange) for your changes to remain permanent.

plex should remember the chosen or download art, if not then you have some bigger problem going on.

if you never want plex to use online metadata for a particular show or shows, you must fix match and choose the personal media agent

Hi TeknoJunky,

Thank you for your very precise guide.

I will try that now & hopefully Plex will remember it next time I access it.

That is my main problem.

It doesn’t remember some settings & then for no reason allocates an image from a COMPLETELY different show to another one.

I have changed it over & over again to the correct image but I have no idea why it’s doing that.

Thanks again,

try to provide specifics and/or screenshots.
along with exact path/filenames.

talking in generalities doesn’t help get your problem solved.
