As you can see, you are still getting a lot of network changed warnings.

I also still see some broadcast errors in your logs, so something is still not right.

Given what you stated about the WD having the same issues at the same time and the network reset and cable check on the Synology, it seems to point to the router once again.

You stated earlier that you reset the router to factory specs, so unless you made some very bad configuration errors, it is looking like a router issue.

Feb 23, 2026 08:59:24.809 [139803621677880] DEBUG - [Notify] Now watching "/volume1/PlexMediaServer/Music Concert Films"

You need to get any and ALL media out of the PlexMediaServer folder immediately!!!

Did you NOT read the warning message in that folder, it is written in several languages.

Read the third line in the image above.

And yes, that can and does effect Plex’s operations.

You should go to Control Panel > Shared Folders and create a folder named Media or similar.

Then in File Station create the following folders within the Media folder:

Media/
    Movies
    Music
    Photos
    TV Shows
etc...

Move your media to the appropriate folder above and point each of your libraries to the appropriate folder above only!

E.G. Movies library points to /volume1/Media/Movies only.

The public IP is changing approximately every 12 hours so it looks like a conversation with the ISP will be required. Either you have a failing modem or the ISP is detecting activity they deemed suspect and are forcing an ip change.

“Did you NOT read the warning message in that folder, it is written in several languages”.

Well, that’s an extremely BLUNT comment. Perhaps not very helpful from SUPPORT!

@Keith-Andrews

  1. Trumpy81 is a Plex user, like yourself.
  2. His statement, however direct, is correct

I’m the Synology developer for Plex.
I put the warnings in /volume1/PlexMediaServer for reason.

You need to move your media to a different/other shared folder(s)

What you’ve done is to have PMS try to watch itself.
This results in a never-ending loop causing PMS to stop working.

Ok, I understand that. So I have followed the instructions as suggested.

So my media is now in a Media folder, with sub folders for Music, Audiobooks, etc.

However, when I come to add the media through editing the library, all I see is

/volume1/Media

I don’t see any sunflowers to add, so all I keep getting is an empty library!

Please, what am I doing wrong! I think I’ve followed the instructions, but all I’ve now got is an entirely empty Plex library, comments that I put my media in the wrong folder 4 years ago (despite the fact, that it worked faultless, and comments thst my router is about to stop working!

I am getting very despondent.

@Keith-Andrews

With your media now in other shared folders, Here’s why we’re doing this

  1. Plex runs as a non-privileged user on DSM 7 (Their rules)
  2. Plex has minimal resources on DSM 7
  3. We get around these limitations by following Synology’s rules
  • We put the media in shared folder(s) – with subfolders if that’s easier
  • We give user PlexMediaServer permission to read the files.
    – This is the important step because it can’t see anything without doing so

Here’s the procedure.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

Yes, it was meant to be blunt, since you obviously disregarded the warning.

As ChuckPA pointed out, the warning exists for a reason, that is why he placed it there and let me tell you, that Chuck and I fought long and hard over that message.

I felt the message should have been more forceful, but Chuck thought otherwise and so the message remained somewhat mellow.

Unfortunately, no one has any control over whether or not equipment fails. It happens and the best any of us can do is deal with it as best we can.

I know it is not the greatest of news, but it certainly does look like your router is failing or perhaps as @pl_5309 suggested, your ISP is having issues with your set up and is forcing changes.

I am by no means convinced that the router is at fault, but so far, the evidence seems to point in that direction.

I strongly advise you to contact your ISP and discuss the matter with them. If they supplied the router and it is at fault, then they will likely provide a replacement for you.

I appreciate your honesty. But “obviously disregard" is also a little strong. Both getting to terms with Plex and a Synology NAS are not the most straightforward of things at the best of times. It is easy to miss things out when you are not familiar with systems or processes. Also people familiar with such things do tend to talk in jargon, which makes those with lesser knowledge feel belittled and that they are being talked down to!

I shall contact my ISP, although it is working for every other system at present.

If that doesn’t work, regretfully Plex takes up too much of my time to be worthwhile.

Your initial post suggested that you were an old hand who had years of experience dealing with Plex, now you claim you are a newbie and didn’t know better.

Sorry, but I’m not buying it.

If you are unsure about something then you should do as much research as you can.

Ask questions in forums such as this, hound Google for answers, whatever it takes to raise your confidence level, before you take the plunge.

That’s just common sense.

I hope you don’t abandon Plex and keep working to find the solution, whatever that may be.

You are the one that will benefit from your efforts, do you really want to give up now?

Whether you wish to buy it or not, is entirely up to you.

I have used Plex for five years. It has worked seemlessly. In the last two weeks it’s failed. I’ve been told it’s my port forwarding rules, it’s my router failing, that my media is in the wrong place (despite it working for five years), Ive been told to change my port forwarding rules (so much so that they are now back exactly where they were), that I haven’t set up DHCP reservation properly, Ive been advised to change the naming of files on my WD NAS (which has nothing to do with the connectivity issue, and spend money into the bargain), Ive been told to use a different DNS, Ive been told to restore my Synology NAS, all of which I have done willingly and hopefully.

Ive asked questions in here, Ive googled many things (which you were obviously not aware of, but demonstrates that I do have common sense).

I have contacted my ISP. They can not find anything wrong with the connectivity and speeds with my router. They have not detected any suspect activity.

So three days since I tried to start sorting out the issue seriously, I’m still in exactly the same position- on my Synology NAS, my media is “Not available outside my network”.

So I said I was despondent, as what worked without issue and was good enough for me to want to buy a Plex Pass, is still no closer to being sorted out.

So I don’t want to give up Plex but IT BROKE AND I DON’T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT.

Gents,

May I be of assistance ?

Chuck,

Thanks fir your support.

I really don’t know what else to do- rebooted the Synology, changed tge poetry forwarding rules, restored the router to factory settings, made changes to DNS and DHCP settings made sure the IP of the Synology is static, spoken to the ISP (who say the router is fine). Ive reset the Plex server, I’ve moved my media.

I have no idea whether this is all counter productive, or what to do next.

Which modem / router (make and model) do you have ?

I want to look up the settings for it and walk through the entire process to ensure you’re getting it from beginning → Syno (firewall?) → PMS

I use the router provided by my ISP, which is EE (formerly BT/British Telecom). It is described as the Hub 6 Plus.

It shows you have to use the EE App to set it up?

Does this look familiar ?

No, EE are pretty “ clunky” but there is web page access to the router- so you set up the port forwarding rules in there, set static IP addresses, DNS, DHCP, etc.

So I’ve set a static IP address for the Synology to 192.168.1.195.

Port forwarding

External 35000

Internal 32400

DNS Server to

Primary 8.8.8.8

Secondary to 8.8.4.4

Cool. Much easier

Now, walk the next step – Syno Firewall

Is it enabled or disabled?

If enabled, did you create a rule to allow 32400/tcp into the machine?

It is not enabled.

now to see what PMS finds.

  1. Settings - [server] - General
  2. Make certain DEBUG logging is enabled (keep VERBOSE disabled) - SAVE if changed
  3. Settings - [ server ] - Remote Access
    – Manually specify the remote port
    – Enter 35000 and hit Apply

(something like this)

  1. If all is successful, it’ll respond (takes a moment) with port 35000 showing as the external port.

  2. If everything (network wise) is working, it will STAY working (green indicator)
