Kick Starting Plex from Win 11 Laptop - 4 digit code needed from app?

Hi again … just trying use my laptop, mobile and a TV to access Plex. It’s installed on the Panasonic TV and Sony phone. But on the laptop when I login via Chrome browser, it asks for a 4 digit code from the app. I am indeed logged in on the app but see nothing … nothing on the phone, or within any of the areas or settings on the Plex app.

Would be great get a steer on where to find this code? I guess it’s a one time validation but I cannot see it anywhere. Here’s a screen shot from the laptop of what I see…

Many thanks in advance

This screen is for linking “big screen” Plex apps to your account,
such as those on smart TVs etc.
Upon the first start of such a Plex app, it should show you the 4-digit code, which you then type into your web browser. Thus, the link of the smart TV plex app and your plex.tv account is created.

Many thanks for the quick reply Otto … in fact this was from a Win 11 laptop. Ironically the Panasonic showed no such request for a code.

I will go try them again but neither then caused the app to show a code. The Panasonic one has a Plex app on it’s Smart TV page but yes I’ve seen those type of code or sometime QR type authentications on other TV based systems.

Just strange that this was from a Win 11 Chrome browser and zero from the TV?

It is supposed to open on a computer, using a web browser.
But only you could have requested the URL. https://plex.tv/link
Your web browser did not open this address by itself.
The computer is used as a “helper”, to avoid you having to type in your plex email address and the password using a regular TV remote control.

What is the question? Have you actually tried to link the Plex app on your TV with your plex account?
Are you sure that you have opened the actual Plex app on the TV, and not just some generic DLNA-compatible media player app?

Hi Otto, yes on the TV I can see the Plex app and I am logged in (in the LHS top corner) icon with a paid up account. I’ve only looked at the one (but the main) TV … this is a screenshot of the app on the set logged in…

And this is the page with the Panasonic provided app installed …

So the TV app seems be in and working I think. I do also have access via the DLNA Panasonic and QNAP box and that looks like this one and works fine…

Ahh I think I see your point on the laptop Plex Otto … I think I input Plex and enter (in Chrome) and then the Plex TV link came up. Would that make sense?

So on the laptop I need be entering a search for Plex and Windows 11? Is it an install of some SW or just access to a web page? I see your point … I’m entering Plex on Chrome and you are saying that it’s coming back with the TV app authorisation page?

It must have been your web browser which has sent you to this page, by “helpfully” pointing you to it as the first search result for “plex”.

Normally, you’d just open https://app.plex.tv (without any folder or file names appended to this address)
Or if you are setting up your server for the first time, you’d use the local IP address of the server machine, as explained in here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200288666-opening-plex-web-app/

There are not many Panasonic TV models which have support for the regular, fully featured Plex app. You might be one of the unlucky who have only the generic “potato app”, which is not able to access personal Plex servers but can only show the free streaming offerings directly from plex.tv

Yes I think so Otto on the search … but to correct that mistake on the Win 11 m,achine? Ahh you mean to use the IP address on the laptop?

My aim (once I sort this QNAP/Plex app issue out) is to use that as the Plex core server and then have our laptops / TV’s and mobiles etc to connect to it … a fairly large movie and TV and photo database.

The Panasonic TV was the flagship model from maybe 4 years back. All the apps seem to work nicely enough but for sure the Panasonic ‘smart’ side is a lot less smart than the LG’s, Sony, machines. But at this moment (on the TV at least) it working … not to the QNAP yet, but to the on-line standard services. I guess once I have the QNAP Plex app running then that should improve things.

I’m a bit confused what the question is here.

As I wrote above: on computers where you simply want to watch, open a web browser and point it to https://app.plex.tv

Don’t visit that /link URL anymore, unless you need to connect another smart TV client.

As for the QNAP issue, I’m afraid I can only give you this, as I don’t have such a device myself: Qnap faq.....read me first!

Good morning Otto.

No I think in fact I confused myself … had a lot going on here last night and indeed today

No your instructions were very clear and indeed today I try that link you kindly sent and it’s working like a charm …

First click and boom, straight in and in on my account. Beautiful.

Isn’t it amazing how just a bad search or link can send you so far off track? Many thanks for your guidance and perseverance on this one. I think I now have good access from the PC and the first TV tried.

On the older Panasonic TV’s I think some have a Freeview Aris box attached and that Plex is accessible on these devices. I will try that lover the weekend but I’m confident that will work on all such devices now.

I will let you know how I get on with all the devices. But again many thanks for your support on this one … a positive tick off the list for a Friday … always good. Now for the rest of the list
