Language handling

Plex seems to be doing most of what I personally need, but the language handling (audio, subtitles, descriptions) could use a bit more features.

  1. Automatic selection of subtitles, in order of preference. I prefer English, if not available then I’d like my native language.

  2. Automatic selection of audio, in order of preference. If possible, “Original” should be a choice. This should be a per-library or per-user setting as well.

  3. Better selection of titles/descriptions. I’d prefer movies from my home country to keep their original titles and descriptions, but from other countries I’d want the English version. If the metadata includes the country of origin for a movie this should be feasible?

  4. Searching for a movie should also look at the original title.

1 and 2 are possible. There is a setting in PMS. Settings \ server \ languages This is for the user so it should carry over to shared servers as well. For users that do not have a PMS setup, this can also be set by going to plex.tv under their user profile.

3 is partially possible. When setting up the library, it asks for a language. Pick the language you like and Plex will try to gran the title and descriptions based on that language if it is available from the source.

4 is not possible currently. There have been many requests to expand the search capabilities.

Hi,

for 1) and 2) I can select one preferred language - I cannot select multiple languages in order of preference.

  1. I’m aware of, however what I want is the ability to say “If the movie is originally Norwegian/Swedish/Danish, use the original title/description, otherwise use the English title/description”. This should, if the downloaded movie metadata contains original language, be fully possible to implement.

  2. Sounds odd to me, but as I don’t know how the DB is organized I can’t say much about how difficult it’d be to implement.
