Would Plex please consider open sourcing the last working version of the Plex Retro app so that those of us who don’t want to upgrade can sideload it? @elan?
I’m sorry the app is not coming back. The app would have stopped working very soon anyway as the Roku themselves are discontinuing the technology it was written with.

So why not throw it up on Github and let me worry about Roku disabling things? My Roku doesn’t have an internet connection anymore, so Roku shouldn’t have any way to disable it. I can’t figure how open sourcing it would hurt Plex in any way, and it would help those few of us who just can’t use UNO.
I don’t quite understand where you are getting at. I mean you(Plex Inc) are not upgrading our hardware nor is Roku Inc., so there is no difference other than the way it looks. Unless you are saying the “new api” Roku is moving forward with is not compatible with old roku devices. But if this is true then all devs(Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, etc…) would be facing the same thing and all peoples’ older roku devices would need to be thrown in the garbage because they will no longer work.
So, is it suggested that Roku Inc is going to force older devices not to work rendering them unusable via their new api?
I am not suggesting anything about the state of their old devices. They have a new SDK they require all apps to be written with. I assume all their devices will be able to run the base firmware and that. SDK, etc. And yes all companies need to update their apps to the new SDK. I can’t imagine Netflix and other big guns won’t update.
I just don’t like that Plex Inc and all of it’s employees keep placing partial blame on Roku Inc for the change or using them as an excuse because it’s not. The direction to go to the new look was Plex Inc. Roku Inc doesn’t care how to make it look. You can make it look like flowers, trees, and leprechauns if you wanted to… The sky’s the limit on this one…
People didn’t like the RokuRetro because what it did in the background or how it did stuff in the background. People liked the simplistic look, feel, and control.
Who cares what going on in the background. That’s Plex’ problem. Not ours, the users.
And what I don’t understand is updated API’s are supposed to enhance user experience and while some commands may not be supported by all devices, there is no reason why you can’t use the new commands and still simplify the app.
Windows 10 is a prime example. Windows 10 is suppose to be a more advanced & robust operating system than previous versions of Windows yet they have managed to dumb the UI to a comparable Win1.0 or Win2.0 look.
Microsoft went from like 16 colors to true color down to 2 colors. The Win10 metro screen is absolutely terrible in terms of color depth.
And I don’t like that Plex Inc wants us to believe the new UNO look and the new SDK are mutually inclusive. They are not. Please don’t pee on us and tell us it’s raining. You Plex Inc want this look. You Plex Inc want to add Podcasts. You Plex Inc want to add NEWS. Roku Inc is not forcing you to do those things. The ONLY question is why. Maybe money, or maybe the top devs like it, or maybe we the users requested it… Who knows, who cares.
There is nothing that is stopping Plex Inc in using the new SDK and creating a stupid simple(simplified) version of Plex for Roku. Please stop lying to us. Simply tell us, the users, that Plex Inc has no desire to keep the old look and feel going.
I never said they were mutuallly inclusive. Regardless of the Roku changes our app was going to update the interface since we are going to be making all our TV apps have that interface. We welcome feedback about the new interface.
Apps like RARflix which are not written with the SDK will cease to work as well since it is not getting updated anymore.
Exactly. One unify look and feel. Of course. How about two interfaces, one app.
Has that ever been considerd before.
Easy<->Normal, Normal<->Advance, KidMode<->GodMode, SimpleMode<->EyeCandy, OldLook<->NewLook, etc…
