New Plex App on Roku is Horrible

This isn’t ready for prime time. The interface is sluggish (navigation between main screen and sub menus is horrid) and lacks feature sets that I’ve come to rely on (search / folders). Speaking on the slowness its particularly bad when moving from a sub folder to the main home screen. The amount of time it takes for it to render a new fresh home screen is simply too long.

[The Fix]
editing this post in the event others see it… you can add back the ‘classic’ or proven interface

The new app is pretty but functionally … its needs a lot of work. Don’t force people to upgrade to an application that doesn’t have the at least the same feature sets. (mostly annoyed because i’ve setup friends, family, co-workers with rokus and I get to hear all of them ■■■■■ about it… at least now I have a work around).

Took a bit to get it but I just want to say THANK YOU!!!

Just to add to my post, I had to remove from ROKU both apps. The original and the plexpass one.
Then, restart the ROKU. In the settings did that but I’m sure if you pull out the power and replace…

Once again, thanks for the link. I don’t know if I get the latest PLEX on ROKU if it would overwrite the classic. Hmmmmm, can someone find out???

The new app and the Classic app will be installed side by side.

Thanks for the info!!

I had both but did not want the new one. With PLEXPASS, I saw the new one some time ago. I had the new one and the classic, both were on ROKU. Just making sure this time. I like the classic…

I found the new interface a bit cumbersome, but got used to it.

However, my wife was ready to have me executed when she encountered it for the first time because she thought it was my doing. Oh my.

Anyway, we have plexclassic alongside it now and I’ll see if I can get her over the initial shock when she’s not tired.

She is not a fan of ‘on deck’ and finds it cumbersome (like 10-15 clicks on roku) to get to the library sections and season episode lists. We used to have it set so the home screen had the library sections right there on top and ‘on deck’ hidden.

Don’t get me wrong - I like the client, but I do miss being able to customize the home screen.

@peterwemm - I had the same response from my wife… got the blame that I changed the interface to something she was unfamiliar with. I manage about 20 rokus for other non-tech folk and was pretty much inundated with similar questions, now everyone is happy … i’m glad that at least the classic was still available, and good know they can run in tandem with each other.

Since my Plex Server is the older version, upgrading the Roku means Plex will no longer work.

How do I NOT upgrade?

You can install the classic version on your Roku … with the above link (after you have logged on).

The update is slooooow.

Both my wife and I really like the new client. It is fairly consistent among platforms now.

I do a agree however that getting to the real “all shows” list does take more clicks in the new UI, however most of the time on deck has exactly what I want to watch next.

No doubt the classic app will not be updated and will stop being usable at some point but thank goodness I can still get it for now, because the new one is amazingly slow and I hate the on deck crap. Never used it, I watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it.

Just give me the show list, everything else is useless clicks.

Is this being pushed out to all clients now? I Suspect I’ll be hearing from my dad soon!

After hearing all these complaints about the new Roku app, I’m wondering if the intended usage is using a phone app as a remote. I can only imagine, that like me, the developer is working with a large library.

This is to a point that I made a while back in Plex’s constantly changing interface and that how to many changes to quickly can annoy users. Well at least on the mobile app. Just when you get use to the interface, “Baam” you just got a new one to learn.

I understand that change is good and that Plex may fell that they are helping their users, but we should at least let the users vote in. The majority wins. But even still if we get to vote the changes should be small if any. Or do a survey on a list of options and/or interface changes that Plex is considering.

Plex needs to slow down a bit and focus more on fixes and functionality. Example: I have a request in for volume control from the hardware buttons of my smartphone when controlling a PHT. A lot of people have made this request but it has been ignored in favor of a new interface that I could care less about.

Did you notice that they took away the Sync quality options away in build 4.9.0.408 in the Mobile App? So I should guess that this is either an over site or they have Plex set to automatically optimized based on the current connection speed. Now for me this is good as I have a unlimited data plan and would rather have Plex automatically adjust to the optimal setting. However other users may not like this and want to control their bandwidth consumption. So to appease both users instead of remove this option they should have added the function to automatically optimize, you know a little check box, done.

Hopefully one day I will get to control the volume of my PHT with my hardware buttons. “Sigh…”

There have been many, many, many topics on how ugly the old app was and that it needs to be more modern. Also, that all Plex apps should have a consistent look across platforms. Well, that is what happened, so Plex was listening to the users.

The UI you see is what has been coming out on all new clietns as of late, so the Roku app is just joining in to provide a consistent UI with other clients. If the Roku is the only app you use, then I can see the shock of a new UI, but if you’ve used any of the other new clients for TVs (PS, XBox, Smart TVs), this would be familiar to you.

I found the new version to be extremely difficult to navigate. Just having a heading for “Recently Added” by itself (without putting into subcategories" would be helpful. Adding a movie and TV shows the same day used to be easy to find. Not so much now. I MUCH prefer the old version.

My Roku doesn’t use this kind of interface for Netflix or Amazon, so it’s completely alien to me.
