Latest plex update has caused all but the computer app to show green rectangles

Server Version#:1.18.2.2015-5a99a9a46-x86_64
Player Version#: ???
Synology DS718+
INTEL Celeron J3455
DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 3

Downloaded and installed server version: 1.18.1.1973-0f4abfbcc-x86_64. Shortly after when I went to watch a show, the video was not shown, just a bunch of green rectangles all over the screen.
When I installed the version 1.18.1 I stopped my the plex server on my synology and installed it.

I forget now the order I did things after that, but at some point I restarted the server and restarted my apple tv. I think I noticed the green rectangles before I restarted my apple tv.

I tried another movie and it worked. At first I thought it was a corrupted video file. Later I tried to play another file and got the green rectangles again. I checked to make sure I was using the latest version and found a newer version: 1.18.2.2015-5a99a9a46-x86_64. I installed that, restarted everything and then I tried several different files with the same result. I tried the app on my computer and it worked great. I tried it on plex web browser (chrome) and got the green, tried it on the mobile app and got the same.

Anyone have any ideas?

I suspect , based on your description, you’re experiencing the iHD intel driver bug.

We’ve fixed a bunch of bugs with it already. still working on more.

The interim workaround:

  1. Stop PMS
  2. You need to log into the ssh terminal for this (Control panel - terminal & snmp)
  3. Log in as “admin” (set a password you know for “admin”)
  4. now jump to administrative privilege
sudo -su root
cd "/var/packages/Plex Media Server/target"
cd lib/dri
ls

you should see the iHD driver and the i965 driver. both are .so files

Remove rm -f the iHD driver you have on your system.

Start PMS

What happens is that PMS reverts to the i965 driver (stable) when the newer doesn’t exist.

Thank you very much, that worked. I appreciate you taking the time to help out.

I have Ubuntu 18.04.3, but do not have this directory:
/var/packages

Linux is located elsewhere:

/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/lib/dri

Thank you very much.
But may be I can download right .so file from Intel support page?

I’m having the same issue with my DS218+. Some videos play OK, others get the green rectangle, box look. I updated a couple of days ago when I saw this, then ensured I got the most recent update installed as well. Same issue.

Forgive a newbie, but is there a more detailed step-by-step you can provide to fix this. I’m on Windows 10 with the PMS on a Synology DS218+. Thanks in advance.

Or would it be possible to downgrade - go to a previous install where it worked?

You can see full instruction on the second message from ChuckPA

@Makasima I saw that, but I’m not sure how to connect via ssh. Can you provide a little more context? (I am a noob and I don’t want to screw things up.)

Also, when it says log in as “admin”, does it have to be actual admin user (which is currently disabled), or anyone with admin privileges?

Thanks again…

You can read this:

Thanks. Figured it out and that was the same fix. Deleting the iHD driver corrected the playback.

Here is the entire command line sequence:

[chuck@lizum ~.178]$ ssh -l admin 192.168.0.23
admin@192.168.0.23's password:
admin@moesern:~$ sudo -su root
sh-4.3# cd "/var/packages/Plex Media Server/target/lib/dri"
sh-4.3# ls
i965_drv_video.so iHD_drv_video.so
sh-4.3# rm -f iHD_drv_video.so
sh-4.3#

For those using an asustor nas, the path is /volume1/.@plugins/AppCentral/plexmediaserver/lib/dri

Anyway, this solution works for me, but after a few days it happens again. If I look in the folder, the iHD driver is there again and I have to delete it. Anyone know how to perma fix this?

This solution is temporary only! After Server refreshing it is necessary to repeat.
In the latest server version on the Syno DS218+ with PlexPass HW accelerating can’t transcoding, so I cannot play a film. (on LG LB670 HD tv)
Embitters how much manure the plex makes work and their subscriber does not count as him!!!

Yes, This is only per installation/update of Plex Media Server. I have stated, multiple times throughout the forum, this is a work around.

Again, I will also state: The root cause is the Intel provided iHD_drv_video.so driver. WE are fixing Intel’s software rather than wait for Intel to do it.

I will thank everyone to keep the tone civil and productive.
Frustrations are running high. We all know this. We are trying to get it resolved so everyone can enjoy their media for the holiday season.

The more time spent here repeating myself detracts from the time spent on resolving the problem.

I will thank everyone, in advance, for their understanding and consideration.

@ChuckPa, I tried to find a comparison what this new Intel driver would do better then the existing one currently used in Plex. Would this new iHD_drv_video.so suddenly enhance the experience much? Lower system utilization significantly ?

The driver itself is nothing more than a data mover.
Like any driver, its purpose is to handle communication.

It shouldn’t have any impact on CPU Utilization levels because it’s such a small fraction of the CPU load required.

I refreshed it the servert onto the newest one. The mistake same thing!!
With the intel driver can see onlĂ green lines on the screen, if I login as root and I remove it, the playback does not start with a trancecoding mistake.
I don’t understand, how the plex does not put it back the old, worked intel driver??
This would be really solvable!

@szicsu

If you install an update, delete the iHD_drv_video.so again.

The iHD_drv_video has not yet been fixed.

After delete don’t start the play… transcoding error!
I use Syno DS218+, plexpass, LG LB670 w plex app
