Latest Plex update on Firestick TV has broken the sound on mkv movies playback

Server Version#:1.21.3.4046-3c1c83ba4
Player Version#:8.13.1.23036
The latest update on my firestick TV as caused the sound playback on my movies to break.

Whenever any movie is played, the sound is just a loud hiss. Prior to the update, all movies played successfully.

In order to see if I can get the sound to return, I then changed the “Passthrough” setting. I always use the setting on “Optical” and it has always worked. Switching the setting to “HDMI” or “Disabled” just allows movie music to play without any dialogue.

Playing other entertainment such as webshows or plex movies / trailers, sound works properly. On my own mkv files, sound is no longer playing. I can play the same files on my desktop using the “Plex For Windows” application and the movies play properly with sound.

Same issue seen here. I have a slightly newer plex version on my fire tv stick but same issue - a loud hiss on audio. Setting audo passthrough to disabled stops the hiss but I don’t get any audio then. A few previous versions all was fun so an update introduce an audio bug.

It’s disappointing that no one from plex has commented on this.

Totally agree. There must be other users who also have this issue. We can’t be the only 2 in the whole world!!.

While investigating, I discovered a workaround but it is not ideal as effectively only sets audio to stereo. With “Passthrough” set to optical, another setting appears called “Optical encodings” where the only available option is “AC3” and I have this ticked. If “AC3” is unticked, the audio works, but the output is only in stereo.

I have tried the firestick plugged into my TV where I use optical cable plugged into the sound system and also tried with the firestick plugged directly into my amp in another room. Prior to the update a few weeks back everything worked and now after 2 subsequent updates, it is still broken.
