Latest Update All the sudden 4k will not direct play anymore

I am pretty new on PLEX; 4 K was running smoothly but after latest update 1.18.7.2457 in no way I can play from my Synology 9.18 with 8GB Ram the content in 4K. 1080p fine but no overload in CPU, Direct play off and transcoding on. i have Plex pass.
Better to go back to former version. How can I do this? Or any other suggestions?

Same problem on all clients I have; fire tv, android tablet, android tv, samsung tv, computer. No live tv either

@sixones any update on this after providing you with my log file? There’s a rash of these this week, and I’d like my 4K HDR functionality back…

Guys,

I know this isn’t ideal, but it seems you ave to roll back to a previous version. I used the debugging tool and now all my 4K content is back and works just fine.

I too would like to have my 4K playback restored. This is a pretty key feature of plex they just crippled with this update

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#:7.28.0.15501

Just to add my 10 pence worth if it helps those trying to fix the broken Plex/Fite TV 4K

I have 2 Firesticks (one being 4K)).
They both worked fine until the other day when the Firestick 4k stopped playing some films!

I worked out it wont play 480i files (but will play 480p).

I get an Error msg saying “The server in not powerful enough to convert video”.
But it does fine on the other Firestick and it did play them fine the other day on this one!!

So it seems Plex on a FireTV 4k now wants to transcode anything that isn’t 480p… which my NAS cant do!

I tried to re-encode a 480i file to 480p using Handbreak thinking that may solve the problem but Plex still struggled with it. Though it did play it just about!

That ‘trick’ only works if the file you create will Direct Play on the device that’s playing it. ‘The File’ or ‘The Bug’ is preventing it, but I sure would like to see a MediaInfo report on that file you made.

Any Updates on a fix?

You have to disable Pass Through on the client app. That worked for me. It’s a major bug.

Same issue here. Please fix it.

i haven’t been able to watch 4K content with my new firestick for a month now, so hopefully they update Tidal and LiveTV and more of their ad-based server content first. I want those things to be perfect for when i never use them. then they can fix the firestick issues.

Same issue with my Fire Stick 4k… transcoding unnecessarily and ruining HDR content.
Luckily my Sony’s Plex app still plays 4k HDR content properly.
It’d be nice to have a “Force Direct Play” option as is available on some other platforms, such as Roku, as I don’t ever actually need to transcode anyway

Same issue since I run Plex app version 7.28.0.0.15501 on my Firestick 4K.
All 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR) content throws an error.

I rolled back to version 7.27.0.15018 (I had to side load it). This older version seems to not have that issue.

7.29.1 fixed it for me.

They won’t. They don’t care.

Yep 7.29.1 fixed it.

Hopefully they add more regressions tests so these bugs won’t happen again.

I still don’t seem to be able to update to layers version!! How are you guys doing it?

Same for me! Why does Plex always add USELESS FEATURES and then BREAK ESSENTIALS FEATURES like PLAYING THE FREAKING VIDEO???

This issue has been fixed in v7.29 and should be available via the Amazon AppStore sometime this week, you can sideload the build from our release announcement: Plex for Android
