Let's Fix Podcasts!

I think we can all agree that podcast support in Plex is a hot mess. I know it can’t be fixed overnight, but a few overall changes would greatly improve its usability! Currently, I use Plex to manage and consume all of my media EXCEPT podcasts. Let’s change that!

By default, a newly added podcast is sorted new to old. This is a good default, as it’s what most users probably expect, however, it comes with consequences in Plex. When sorted new to old, playing the latest episode of a podcast will then queue EVERY previous episode of the podcast, whether the episodes have been played or not. If anything, an episode’s played status should be respected and not added to the queue. To avoid this behavior, sorting needs to be changed from old to new. At least this gives a somewhat expected result with the queue if listening to a podcast in order. However, as before, played status is not respected, and every newer episode is added to the queue.

(Every episode below episode #170 in the screenshot below has been marked as played, but is added to the queue when the podcast is sorted new to old.)

Using the web interface, there is no visual indication of whether and episode is played/unplayed. As far I as know, they only way to know is to select the options for a specific episode and see if you can mark the episode as played or unplayed.

On Deck seems to only half work. It’s accurate for some podcasts, but for others that have had episodes manually marked played/unplayed, it doesn’t seem to get updated.

For the podcast Reply All, I marked all episodes as played, then marked the 2 of the 3 latest episodes as unplayed. It now no longer appears under On Deck, even though you can see it shows unplayed episodes on the My Podcast tab.

If you start listening and have an episode in progress, it will return to On Deck.

I’m sure I forgot something, but these are the major annoyances that really limit usability of podcasts. Sorting and queuing is absolutely broken and should take priority.

I have a few suggestions for how podcasts are handled in Plexamp, but maybe we can get some of the above handled first!

(On a side note, in the web interface, clicking on Podcasts will always take you to the Recommended tab. It doesn’t seem to remember the selected tab.)

Feel free to post other issues or complaints, but please keep it constructive. Let’s not have this turn into a Plex hate-fest. That won’t accomplish anything. :upside_down_face:

This is, and has been the single biggest problem for me in the last year. The unplayed/played marker disappeared silently about a year ago, and it’s been reported over and over again. I really do hope that it can just be sorted out.

Wait… This doesn’t address how podcasts appear unplayed or played in some Podcast views. Maybe we weren’t clear in which views this was a problem.

In Episodes view, you can see which are played or unplayed:

But in Shows view, there is no discerning feature to indicate unplayed. In the following screenshot only one of the three episodes is marked as played.

Did I miss something?

Well, there definitely are no indicators when browsing a podcast by shows view. However, I don’t see them when browsing by episode view either. :man_shrugging:

and this issue needs to be fixed as well!

I opened the forums to request that podcasts not be added to the queue automatically, but I see this post does a great job of highlighting that and other issues around podcast handling.

So I’ll just reply to draw attention to this post instead.

So I’d suggest that AT LEAST stop adding episodes to the play queue. Sounds like a quick fix until the rest of the behavior can be reviewed and thought out better.

Great post, and some good choice of Podcasts! (Checkout Late Night Linux and Self Hosted Show).

I’d just like to add I too have noticed these problems and every single one is an absolute deal breaker.

For me the big one was the the playlist. Plex needs a dedicated separate playlist, not that I use the normal playlist. I currently use AntennaPod, when a new episode gets downloaded, its marked as not listened and add to the bottom of the queue, I use oldest first in my queue. So my listen flow is pretty much open the app and click play, when an episode is listened to it is marked as listened to and deleted from the storage and the queue.

Like the OP all my photos, music (inc tidal sub), TV and movies is on plex, its a bit annoying that I cant get my podcasts on here to unless these problems are fixed!

Why is no Plex Dev’s commenting on this?
I have seen severall topics about the same, but they have been closed due to inactivity.

This is a hughe issue, as it gets difficult to remember what I have listened to.

On my mobile app everything is ok. But on the windows app, and via browser it is not working.

Making a comment to keep this open. My biggest issue is that no matter how a show is sorted (oldest or newest first) the next episode that’s auto played after an episode finishes is never the next episode, it’s always the previous episode. I believe this may have something to do with what was mentioned in the OP that episode marked as played are ignored and always added to the que. Maybe adding a setting that hides episodes that are marked as played would help?

I just noticed the play queue thing for the first time today, and it is super annoying for sure.
Going to a podcast, selecting one episode directly to play and it adds all 1000 episodes to the queue. Add to queue adds to the end of the 1000, and play next is a pain because then you have to reorder stuff.

And why can’t I set a default playback speed like in every other podcast app that I have used?
I can change the speed while listening to an episode, and then the very next episode resets the speed which makes it sound like it is horribly slow.

Allowing podcasts to be ordered descending but played ascending is a must. The current behavior (playback order follows sort order) not only departs from existing convention, but annoys the user due to having to manually play each newer subsequent podcast.
