Server Version#: Version 1.20.0.3133
Player Version#: 5.1.0 / 4.8.0 (Early Access LG Client)
I was hoping someone could help me with an issue I have been testing today.
I have a collection of HEVC 4K HDR files with TRUEHD7.1 tracks.
I can use Xplay and the files direct play and work fine, I can use a firestick and the files also play fine (not checked if also direct playing)
The LG plex app reports no ability to play truehd which is technically true as it can’t pass through full HD audio so the server then transcodes the audio from 7.1 truehd to 7.1 eac.
I have tried removing the intel drivers as I thought this looked like a similar problem but it did not help:
I do have another server running Ubuntu 18.04 I could test the same files with but thought I would post here to see if it is a known issue?
What is very strange is my version of Ready Player One plays perfectly with no glitches even when transcoding the audio track. But a version of Thor Ragnarok and The Fifth Element show immediate glitching unless I switch to a 5.1 AC3 track which then direct plays.
To add to findings: I have a low power Odroid XU4 with PMS 1.19 that plays with no issues but I believe this is because when it transcodes TRUEHD it is going to AAC format (probably due to the low power of the device) - but… no video glitch!
Will try find some 4K HDR X265 files with TRUEHD tracks and test them out then share.
Another interesting find - I had assumed the firestick was doing Directplay as it didnt show any of this issues but looking at it the stream is being transcoded like the LG plex client but shows no glitching at all.
I’m also seeing issues with Thor Ragnarok. When TrueHD selected, I see a rectangle of corrupt video in upper left corner of screen. When dts or AC3 audio selected, the video plays normally.
DM’d you link to 30 second clip of Thor Ragnarok. Let me know if you’ve trouble downloading.
LG B7 OLED, Plex client 5.1 preview enabled, WebOS 3.8.
PMS 1.20.0.3133 on Synology DS918+
This issue also exists in the existing app, it’s HDR + direct streaming that causes it, though it sounds like it works some of the time (a sample file with HDR + TrueHD where it works would be helpful for comparing).
Comparing to fire stick is going to show a lot of differences, at this point in the preview comparing to the existing webOS app is what we’re concerned about.
I am having this exact issue. Tried several movies, but gonna try more…
I am using the LG 65 B7. Running plex server on my computer that has the 4k files on a SSD.
Intel i7-5930k
GTX 1080
My network is also wire based, so i don’t think its a network issue.
Further more after alot of research I have been able to turn off transcoding. I am only using my plex server for viewing my 4k material at home. And it works just fine when I play the same movie via the Nvidia Shield (2017), but I notice the picture is much better and more detailed via the internal plex app on the TV then via the shield. But I have these glitches like other people on this thread every few seconds.
Video : x265 3840x1600 @ 13.1 Mb/s (CRF 17)
Audio : English Dolby Atmos 7.1 @ 4602 kb/s
: English Dolby Digital 5.1 @ 640 kb/s
: Commentary AAC LC 2.0 @ 114 kb/s
After some testing myself the glitching would only appear on the LG Plex Client when it is converting audio track TrueHD 7.1 > EAC3 on a HDR video. It will do this all the time as LG TVs cannot pass HD audio via eArc from built in Apps, it can only relay external devices HD audio through the eArc channel.
Android Plex client (tested on the firestick & shield) does not have any issues.
Would be nice to just use the built in app for all videos - Any update from Plex on this?
I have an LG CX and have exactly the same thing playing 4k HDR content with DTS Audio via the LG WebOs Plex App.
If you tell the LG WebOS Plex App that DTS is supported (configurable in settings) then the video plays perfectly - but without any audio at all (the content in question is DTS-only, so cant choose a different audio channel).
Unchecking ‘DTS’ from the supported audio formats in the plex app causes the Plex Media Server to helpfully try to transcode the audio, which results in these exact graphical glitches as pictured at the top of this thread from about the ten second mark in any video. Interestingly the audio works perfectly, but the picture is just colors and glitches.
I have tried multiple different computers as Plex media servers - all hardwired - so its not a CPU or bandwidth limitation which is what I initially suspected. It seems its CLIENT related indeed - the LG tv’s implementation of the Plex app simply barfs when hit with 4k HDR content with audio transcoded from DTS. Seems like a bug in the app! Any way this can be hunted down?
Frigging LG really kept it quiet that they’d walked away from DTS with these CX sets. Total shock after dropping a couple of grand on this panel that they didnt spring the extra few bucks for DTS licensing…
Update - can confirm this glitch only occurs with HDR content that has audio codecs that aren’t supported by the TV.
4k videos without HDR content (but unsupported audio codecs) play/transcode the audio just fine (no glitches)
4k videos with HDR content and supported audio also play just fine (no glitches)
4k videos with HDR and unsupported audio codecs glitch the video stream after 10 seconds of playback. Weirdly, the audio continues to play just fine, but the picture turns into a rainbow palette for the rest of the video.
Same problem on LG CX with ARC (no eARC AV amplifier) and H265 4k HDR video
Sound tracks are TrueHD 7.1, DTS-HD HRA 7.1 and EAC3 5.1 (none supported by simple ARC)
If I say the amplifier can decode it, no sound, video OK
If I uncheck EAC3 into plex setting, I get the sound, but the display problem after playing the video for 0 to 120sec
And the TV auto select direct Stream, if I force DirectPlay, a lot of PC CPU load and I loose HDR.
Plex Server 1.21.1
LG Plex client 5.6.1
I’m new to Plex and encountered this issue immediately on my LG B7. When TrueHd track is selected, the video just turns to a solid colour with a square of scrambled video in the top left corner. The issue is resolved when switching to AC3 5.1 track.
My server is barely breaking a sweat and the TV is hard wired to my router via a 1GB ethernet usb 3.0 converter so it’s not a network bandwidth or server CPU issue.
Really disappointed as my understanding is that plex should easily transcode the TrueHD to EAC3 5.1 and play the video track as is without a hitch. The solution to just switch to the AC3 5.1 track is not really solving the problem, it’s just a workaround and not great as these tracks do not sound as good as a TrueHD track transcoded to EAC3 5.1.
Still the odd glitch and buffer here and there even with the 5.1 track selected which is frustrating.
Is Plex going to update the LG client app to resolve these issues and when?
Thanks
