My LG TV & Plex app seem to not pass through DTS for some reason.
My TV is a LG OLED55C24LA.
The Soundbar is: LG SP8YA.
The Soundbar is connected via HDMI 2.1, E-ARC.
All other audio formats work correctly, and I’m 99% sure this worked about a month or 2 ago, but it’s now not working.
Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos etc all work without issue.
DTS Fails to play when I select the “DTS” support in the plex media app.
If I untick that box, DTS works fine (I’m assuming plex transcodes it or something)?
This is across multiple films.
An interesting note why I think this is the Plex app at fault…
With the film 10 Cloverfield lane, it has 2 soundtracks.
DTS-ES & AC3 Stereo…
This is the main soundtrack, and an audio commentry.
If i select the DTS-ES track, it ignores this, and plays the AC3 stereo commentary version.
Screen shot below showing you what I mean.
So I can only assume the Plex app has decided that DTS is there, decides it cannot/will not play it, and then sends through the stereo version instead.
This is despite the DTS-ES track being selected.
Check the TV codec support. It doesn’t support DTS. LG stopped paying for the DTS license around 2009 I think? That’s why the DTS option is in the LG Plex app which typically isn’t in most Plex apps, so you can tell it if you have a older LG TV that supports DTS or a newer one that does not.
You can review the TV specifications on LG’s web site to see supported audio codecs. Also, check the review at rtings.com, as they test supported audio formats.
Monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing + Expanded View. It will show you if the video or audio is transcoding.
As @FlashMasta states, the TV does not support DTS audio. It also does not support TrueHD audio.
When you play a TrueHD or DTS audio track using the Plex LG app, Plex Media Center will transcode the audio to a supported format.
If you want DTS-HD MA and TrueHD audio, you will need to acquire a Nvidia Shield and connect it to a HDMI input on the soundbar.
The TV blocks all DTS passthrough for devices connected to HDMI inputs. So, if you connect a Shield to one of the TV’s HDMI inputs, the audio will still be transcoded. Passthrough for TrueHD is supported. Pull up the TV’s review at rtings.com (link) and search for “passthrough.”
