LG TV does not remote play

Server Version#: 1.42.1.10060
Player Version#: 5.93.2 (Plex for LG)

I have a local plex server running on a Terramaster NAS and I share this remotely with a friend’s plex server (and he shares with me). Both of us have a lifetime plex pass.

I have just bought a new LG OLED65C54LA TV. The WebOS Plex client on the TV works fine for my local server, I can see all libraries and I can playback ok. I can see and browse my friend’s remote server, however when I try and play I just get the spinning circle.

I can browse my friend’s server and successfully play remotely from my phone, my laptop and another TV (Sony running the Android Plex client), and all are a mixture of wired and wireless connections on the same network. This shows my router is working and is not blocking anything on the wired or wireless connection. The router is not running a VPN.

I have a 2Gb reciprocal fibre internet connection and the LG TV is wired directly to the router. My friend has a 1Gb reciprocal fibre connection. So internet speed is not an issue.

My plex server Remote Settings all show green an fully working.

On searching online for any solutions it suggests…

  • Power cycling the TV (with a 60s gap)
  • Delete the cache
  • log out and back in, in the plex client
  • Uninstall and install the plex client
  • Settings > Advanced, and set Allow Insecure Connections to Always.
  • Manually port forward to 34200 (already have that set)
  • Set Force Play

…none of which solve the issue.

I have also seen online that a solution to this it to purchase a Firestick 4k max and run the plex client from there. However I feel that the Plex client running on one of worlds biggest TV brands, should function.

Has anyone else had this issue and can suggest a solution.

Many thanks,
Tony

An update on this.

I’ve managed to get it working on my LG TV by changing the Maximum Remote Quality from Unlimited (which should be perfectly reasonable when there is a 1Gb reciprocal internet connection between the servers) to the next option down, 20Mbps - 4K (about 9GB per hour).

This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

If I had to guess what is happening here, drawing on my 36 years as software developer, I would guess there is an initial speed test, testing the connection between the servers and there is a bug when set to Unlimited or the speed test for Unlimited is taking so much time, it gives the impression that it will never play media.

Not a bug. Surely you understand that there has to be a default setting for an option like this.

May I suggest voting in this thread.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your response.

Maybe I’m not understanding here. The default for my Plex client running on my LG TV was Unlimited, so why would it not play between to remote servers that have a 1Gbps fibre connection? Under what conditions would the Unlimited option work ?
The setting of the default to Unlimited is not the issue, the issue (bug) is, when set, that option causes no playback from the remote server.

Clearly I misread your update post.

Something else must be going on. Might the traffic from your friends server going through a relay for some reason? Are you causing a transcode that your friends server can’t handle?

On a side note you’re most likely not getting gig speeds at your TV. It probably has a 100 mbps jack on it.

“Might the traffic from your friends server going through a relay for some reason?”

No

”Are you causing a transcode that your friends server can’t handle?”
No

Neither of those suggestions explain why it all starts to work if I change the Max Remote Quality from Unlimited to 4K, as it would be going through the same connection and it would be causing the same transcoding (if transcoding was necessary) in both cases.

This still has the hallmarks of a bug.
