I have looked through many posts on here and it seems as though none ever get fully resolved, or even answered by an expert 
Every time I try to play a film on my LG smart TV I get error H4 Codec
Is there a fix for this, or should I dump Plex?

Can you please expand on the type of files your trying to play and is your TV a UHD/4k or HD TV
Hi, where do I see the file type? All I have is movie thumbnails which I click on.

Firstly are you sure your TV is 1080P set. As the Plex client is the wrong one if that is the case. Can you forward the Model details please.
Now as for your File details, Go to Movie title Poster, hover the Cursor over the bottom left and a ellipsis will appear. Scroll down to Info.
