No DTS anymore

On the LG OLED65G19LA TV I have installed the PLEX app.

My problem: No more DTS!

When I select DTS in the sound settings I have no more sound in DTS movies. But my server (Synology DS218+) is not busy and the video runs without any problems.

If I deselect DTS I hear sound but no DTS anymore. Then the video lags every few seconds and it starts buffering. The server is one hundred percent busy then.

With my old TV I didn’t have any issues playing the videos with activated DTS.

Any ideas?

The TV does not support DTS audio. LG dropped support for DTS a few years ago.

If you see an option for DTS audio in the Plex app settings, turn it off. DTS will then be transcoded by the Plex Media Server to a compatible format.

Monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing. If the video is transcoding, you will experience buffering as the Celeron CPU is a low power device and will struggle to transcode most video.

If you have subtitles enabled, turn them off. The Plex app has limited support for subtitles. Enabling them can easily result in a video transcode.

Thank you very much for your explanation. I didn’t know that LG dropped DTS support :frowning:

I’ll try your suggestion. In the worst case it might be time to upgrade my NAS.

What I don’t understand: The TV is set to passthrough (to my Bose Lifestyle 650).

Why does Plex start transcoding the audio then? I can’t find an option in Plex to stop it doing this.

Alternately, consider using an Nvidia Shield Pro instead of the Plex app on the LG. An Amazon FireStick 4K Max is also an option if you do not need TrueHD/TrueHD + Atmos audio.

The Plex app on Android TV devices is a more capable client. It will direct play PGS, VOBSUB, & SRT subtitles whether or not the video or audio is transcoding. ASS subtitles will cause a video transcode, but that is the case on most Plex clients, including LG.

See the post linked below for additional details.

A bit of context: It mentions “burning” subtitles, which is the process of adding them to the video stream. The process uses the CPU, not the GPU. Any low power CPU, such as a Celeron, will struggle to burn subtitles in real time. Also, a Plex Pass will be of limited help. The video transcode will use the Celeron’s integrated GPU, but the burning still uses the CPU.

I have now connected my hard drives directly to the TV and the movies run without problems. The TV briefly shows a message that it can’t play the sound signal, but it is set to passthrough and the Bose system can play the sound without any problems.

Why is this not possible with Plex?

The Plex app uses the native video player built into the webOS operating system. Therefore, it is limited to the codecs supported by the TV set hardware and webOS operating system. These are generally the codecs listed in the TV specifications (some of which may be restricted to streaming audio only and cannot be used as part of a movie stream).

Other apps, including those supplied by LG, such as the DLNA client, may have the ability to decode additional audio formats in software.

The Plex app does not have software decode capability. Therefore, audio formats such as dts will be transcoded by the Plex Media Server to a compatible format.

Furthermore, there is a difference between local playback (ex: from USB port) and streaming (Plex, DLNA, etc). The streaming protocols used between the Plex server and the Plex app (HLS, etc) may also restrict which audio formats can be supported.

The above is my understanding of things (I’m not a developer, a Plex employee, or privy to how Plex develops their SmartTV apps).
