Hi. I have quite powerfull Plex server running on Synology NAS Ds220 (running in Docker). In webApp it handles simultaneous transcoding of 4 high quality movies with srt subtitles no problem.
My LG WebOs Plex client also manages playing movies with external srt subtitles no problem…BUT only if i dont try lowering video quality (= when direct playing). But as soon as i lower quality or force transcoding of the video, the client forces burning subtitles into the movie…which of course my server cant handle on the fly even with HW transcoding.
Why the hell is it burning subtitles into the video if the player obviously can handle common srt subtitles on its own? I noticed the same behavior also in case of Kodi player with plex plugin on my ShieldTv.
This is not an issue for me personally but for everyone else outside my home who need to transcode my videos (either for compatibility issues or internet bandwith).
I want to point out that i really keep only videos with srt subtitles in utf-8 format purposely for compatibility reasons. So this behavior definitely shoud not happen and is not caused by another subtitles in not supported format.
Than you for explanation. However this is just a better description of the bug. I dont understand why these apps act like this if they could simply receive transcoded video/audio and subtitles separately, like in case of direct playing. How can streaming protocol be an issue - streaming protocol cant recognize if it is streaming transcoded or original stream, right? It is just wrongly programmed clients in my eyes. Especially if plex states that srt subtitles are fully supported by all their clients - apparently they are not, considering that LG and Samsung covers absolute majority of smart tv market.
This is BIG bug and should be fixed by plex team.
Solution cant be buying other tv sticks, it make no sense
Plex team, please consider this, why you have plex clients on smart tv platforms if they cant manage transcoded videos with external srt subtitles? This is sooo limiting, really!
