LG webOS 3.5 Transcodes HDR to x264

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3795
Player Version#: Latest

My LG Plex app will happily play 4k HEVC content, but if the content is HDR it always transcodes the video to x264, which cripples my server. I have read various things about TrueHD and problems with subs so I have tested versions of the same movie with no audio track or subs at all, and the video is still transcoded. The same video file (with the audio track this time) plays fine on the TV over DLNA, and Direct Play and Direct Stream are enabled on the player (and work on all non-hdr content, both x264 and hevc).

Anyone know why Plex is forcing the transcode?

Log files will probably be required.

  • Set the Plex LG app to log to the server at debug level.
  • Set your Plex server for debug (not verbose) logs. See Reporting Issues with Plex Media Server for instructions.
  • Play a 4K HDR file for 30 seconds - no subtitles, audio track that direct plays (AC3, dts if supported by tv)
  • Stop playback, wait 1 minute to make sure server logs everything.
  • Pull log files.
  • Post ZIP file to the thread.

Also, pull the Plex XML info for the file you played and attach it to the thread. Save the info as a .txt or .log file. The forum does not permit .xml attachments.
