LG webOS needlessly transcoding 4K/UHD to 1080p

When playing a 4K/UHD video with a TrueHD 7.1 primary audio track and AC3 5.1 secondary track, Plex sometimes forces a video transcode where none is necessary.

With “File1.mkv”:

I select TrueHD 7.1, audio is transcoded, and after an error is reported from the player (before anything actually plays back), video is transcoded to 1080p. The video then plays, but at 1080p.
If I select AC3 5.1, the movie plays in UHD with HDR and reports that it’s playing AC3 5.1, but actually plays a stereo commentary track instead.
Stripping the TrueHD track from the file results in this playing 4K/UHD w/ AC3 5.1, correct audio, no problems, direct play both audio and video.

With “File2.mkv”:

The same behavior is seen with TrueHD 7.1 selected.
With AC3 5.1 selected, it transcodes the video to 1080p.
Stripping the TrueHD track from the file results in this still transcoding the video to 1080p, AC3 5.1 audio direct stream. This may mean there’s a problem with the video stream itself.

EDIT: The wrong audio track is also being played when selecting anything other than the primary track–split this into a different topic.

I just want to confirm this behaviour. Playing a 4K file with a TrueHD track set before playback will cause the file to transcode to 1080p. Starting the file with a 5.1 AC3 or even a 7.1 DTS-MA HD audio track set before playback will play the 4K file in Original format with HDR. If you then change from this to the TrueHD track will cause the stream to crash with the error, Not enough disk space to convert this item.

Additionally, this behaviour does not occur using the XPLAY client for LG

I hadn’t watched any 4k videos for a while, but tried to today, and ran into the same issue. This happened both on 7.1 and 5.1 audio. Both videos have previously played great with HDR on this same TV, while outputting digital audio to my receiver through ARC. I had a power outage today and the TV rebooted, don’t know if that forced some cached files to be updated with new player version files or anything.

This is all hard-wired gigE, nothing in the setup has changed since i last played these files, no webOS update, nothing. Seems as though the client is saying my maximum bitrate is 2Mbps (!!!)
