LG webOS Player Broken After 2021 Update

Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282
Player Version#: Client 5.12.2 / Platform 3.9.0

Client Model: LG 65UJ6300-UA
webOS Version: 3.9.0-62803 (dreaklocks2-dudhwa)
Software Version: 06.00.03

Server Model: Synology RS815+
OS Version: DSM 7.0 Beta

I have been running PMS on my Synology NAS using the DSM 7.0 Beta since it became available. Direct playing large .mkv files to my LG TV worked without issue (minus the occasional quick buffer). This all changed with the latest update to webOS and the corresponding client update.

After the update it takes a significant amount of time for the app to find the server. Sometimes it requires hopping from menu to menu to get it to refresh. Attempting to play a file is hit and miss. Sometimes it takes pressing “play” a dozen times before it will actually play, otherwise I just get the spinning circle of death until it reports a playback error. Very RARELY will the file play on the first shot.

I see the same behavior between TV show episodes as well. The countdown will work properly, but as soon as the next episode attempts to play, the circle spins and the playback error is reported.

I have recreated the same issue on another LG TV I own that hadn’t been updated yet. It worked without issue, but as soon as I installed the latest webOS and client updates, it behaved the same way as my 65UJ6300.

So far I have used the player on my Mac and it works without issue. I will attempt to use the player on my Xbox One and will post the results on this thread.

I am confident that this is a webOS/client issue and not a PMS/Synology Beta issue.

Anyone else experiencing this same problem?

Same issues. Also x265 no longer plays direct – for some reason the client wants to transcode EAC3 5.1 to MP3 but just hangs and won’t play; only buffers until timeout.

Its the client not the PMS since it works fine on all other clients including web, and iPhone apps – I don’t have many HEVC files so I just noticed this today.

Plex for IOS

I tested it out with my Xbox client and it worked so it definitely looks like an LG client issue.

I tried playing H.264/AAC and still have the same problem. So it’s not a direct play/file type issue.

I’m not seeing this issue with a OLEDB8 all HEVC with various audio with 5.1 Channels all Direct Play.

Are you sure? It’s happening on both my plex servers. Guess my tv is too old? It’s from 2017 I think

I believe it is a 2016 model, you may have bought it in early 2017

As I said previously, I’m having no issue with EAC3 5.1 with webOS 4.3.0

You do have EAC3 enabled in the Plex client settings?

Okay I got it to work by disabling everything in audio AC3, EAC3 and DTS then trying to play again and after letting it time out enabling the them again.

Still doesn’t make any sense why it’s trying to transcode eac to mp3

All my other devices play x265 perfectly. Just tried on my roku and android firestick. Works perfect. Everything direct playing fine nothing transcoding.

I only have issues with x265 everything else works perfectly I do not have the same issues as OP. Everything plays fine for me besides x265

Maybe it’s webOS3?

Same issue!
Takes 4 to 6 presses of play to get it to play. “Playback error” is frequent in between presses of play and the loading circle of death.

LG 49SJ800V webos 3.8

I think my issue is evolving. It looks like only wired devices are able to play without issue. Both my Mac and Xbox (wired) clients seem to work fine, but my iOS, webOS and Xbox (wifi) clients have these issues. Anyone else try wired vs wifi?

Yup. Looks like the issue for me was the connection. I got some ethernet powerline adapters so that I could give my LG a wired connection and all of the issues are gone. The server is found right away and playback works like a dream.
