For the Plex app on LG TVs: Enabling image based subtitles, PGS & VOBSUB, results in a video transcode. Text subtitles, SRT, direct play. However, if the audio is transcoding, enabling SRT subtitles also results in a video transcode. The TV direct plays AC3, EAC3, dts, & dts-HD audio. TrueHD audio will transcode.
