Library Do’s and Dont’s - Please help

Howdy y’all. I’m a Kodi & DirecTV user for the past decade+ and deciding to cut the chord on DTV. Bought a HDHomeRun and PlexPass for local stations and thinking Plex may be the way to go for my family instead of our current Kodi library/setup. I’m curious as to how y’all setup library’s? What I’m wanting to do is have categories if possible. I would love to have “Christmas Movies”, “Halloween Movies”, “Marvel Movies” etc… things we can go to and know we can enjoy. Also, I’d love to have my kids use it but block/parent control what they can watch. Is there anything or cool ideas I can use? Thanks so much.

Plex libraries have a collection feature that you can use to combine movies or shows into groups of your choosing. I also use folders to organize my movies.

That’s great. Do you have any screenshots or instructions on how to set that up? I’m using folders now, but it’s not entirely accurate. Before I restructure my folders, want to learn more about Plex libraries and “collection features”. Thanks

You can create a “unwatched playlist” the will decrement automatically after a title is played.

If you keep all your movies together, you can create a new folder called kids for example, and inside that folder you just create shortcuts to the movies you want them to have access. Their library will point to this folder. This way you can keep your directories organized without duplicating content.

Setup a pin for adult profiles.

If you have your movies sorted by folders, you can keep them there and point your MOVIE library to them. One movie library can access multiple folders:

when you add a folder of marvel movies or what ever. Once they scan into software they will show under movies tab on the first screen as “recently added” and will show as a “ribbon” I’m not sure what you call it. You can hilight all of them by clicking to the little circle on the poster art:

Once you click the ones you want to group, you can click on the pencil to edit the info, click on TAGS and in the “collections” add the name of the group you want to group them in. You can add the same films to mulitple groups to have them show in more than one collection, as I’ve done with this Bergman film that I wanted to group as both a boxset and as part of the Criterion collection:

Once you create your collection, you can add poster art and text and what not to personalize it.

You can also have multiple movie libraries. If you have adult titles that aren’t kid friendly in a certain folder, you could create a separate library for it or vice versa. I’ve done that to keep porn out of the regular movies library, but the porn will show in the search function. I haven’t played with child profiles or shares since I don’t have kids so someone else will have to guide you on that.
