Library Mangment

I have a question concerning managing multiple libraries. One of the biggest uses of my server is to distribute Live OTA TV thru the house. We have several shows that record. Library wise what Id like to have is this:

  • DVR (recorded TV and Movies for OTA TV go here)
  • Movies (from DVD/Blurays)
  • TV (From DVD/Blurays)
  • I might also look at deploying some libraries dedicated to Anime.

I tried to do this in the past but found that OTA content would just record to the TV library. Now Im not sure if that was user error. I do have two older people who use this server to watch and record Live TV. I would also like to mention Im looking to deploy the arrs stack. As I understand it, it can organize my media as well as ensure naming is done now plex wants it. Not sure ifs arrs can solve my issue or what.

Movies and TV use different agents and are dependent on different directory structures so you will have to make two libraries, but I do recommend keeping them separate from your read-only libraries.

There is no way to pre-select a desired library for recordings in Plex. When setting up the recording you can choose a library though (dependent on tv show or movies.)

That sucks. Do you know if the Arrs stack can maybe help? I want to keep it separate to make it easier to go thru the content. Because there is always a possibility that Im not keeping all recordings. Not to mention OTA content has ads, and Id like to keep the stuff with ads separate.

While yes, we can manually choose a library when setting up recording. My dad is nearly 70 years old and he hate technology. He will set stuff up in the wrong directory and claim he had no idea he did it or blame someone else.

I don’t think so, I run the Arr’s and haven’t attempted it, but Sonarr would have to add your show and rename it. In Plex DVR settings there is an option to run a script for Postprocessing. Maybe you could write a script to move files to a specific folder using chatgpt.

I understand your pain there, and wish Plex was more like Emby and had the availability to choose a folder for recordings.

If the first two libraries you create are:

DVR TV
and
DVR Movies

then when you setup recordings, TV will to go DVR TV and Movies will go to DVR Movies.

The first sentence is negated by the second one.

There is a way to define a library. Simply tell Plex which one to use when setting up the recording job.

So just so I understand clearly. If I setup two libraries for recorded TV and Movies respectively then those would effectively be the default and I shouldn’t have too much funny business with recordings?

If there is only one library of each type then there will be no choice.
Only if you create more, like e.g. one for regular feature films, and one for animation movies
then you will get a selector when setting up the recording job.

Thats what Im getting at. I dont want OTA content mingling with Ripped content. So there is going to be multiple TV and Movie libraries. Ideally Id like my libraries setup in the fashion I stated in my OP.

If you go back and read pl_5309’s post, I believe he is suggesting that the recording locations are sorted alphabetically and (I presume), the first one will be selected for the OTA recordings to be stored at. I think believe that is why he’s suggesting to use the DVR_ prefix. It documents where they go, plus they will most likely show up first alphabetically.
