Actually, this shouldn’t be that hard to do. PlexSentry (a windows only app running on IIS) does just this very thing. If the same account tries to play 2 or more streams (based on the limits the admin wants) it kills one of the streams and sends a notification to the admin. Not sure the entire mechanics of how he has it working, but I hear it works pretty well.

Unfortunately, I’m running Linux on all my media devices. It’d be much easier for it to be on Plex than to add another program since it’ll be cross platform compatible and integrated into Plex already. Do you know if PlexPy has this feature? I can’t seem to find documentation regarding it and I suppose it’d be a good solution for now.
The best way to fix this is just use the existing user accounts to fix this situation. If you set up each person in your family with a user account then tell them to start using that user account and set up a password for each account then you will see which family member is sharing your information. Then all you would need is a way to shut down streams to specific devices or man up and go talk to that family member once you use the existing stuff to figure out who it is then tell them it’s not cool and what they are doing is messing with your network and if they don’t stop you will have to remove their user account.
+1 please! I’m about to disable friends accounts and I’d much rather have the option of limiting them to one concurrent session each or some type of IP filtering.
I also need this feature badly!!! I think people do not realize how much bandwidth and cpu power it costs to stream media. A feature like this would save me from having to explain it to everyone I know haha.
This is my #1 request for the product by far. Would like for me to be able to stream as much as I like and for other invited users I share with to have a concurrent user cap and receive a message that there are no available spots if they try to stream something when there are no slots available.
Voted, I use PlexPy which logs all IPs for that user and geotags the IPs. I go through once a week and look at those who have a history of giving their logins out and just block the IP. Send an email to the user and tell them, “change your password, or lose access”
A neat feature, sure, but it certainly sounds like “a silicon-based solution to a flesh-based problem” in your case. I, for one, would just make the next family dinner awkward and delete the offending account.
Currently watching 7 users streaming from me - three from my sisters house, alone. I would love to set maximum users to 4 (at any one time) …a bit like netflix …so that my computer doesn’t melt feeding all these media hungry goblins. It’s sisters, brothers, sons, daughters and grand-daughters…so I can’t really favour one above the other. If plex just informed them “sorry, the maximum number of users are currently connected, please try again later”…that would save me a lot of ear ache. +1
Please please please this and bandwidth limiting. We really need to start seeing admin features like this implemented. They’ve already built one of the best media viewing platforms, now they just need to add to the streaming features and Plex will be the best program around.
Would love this feature. Multi user from the same account is really annoying because people share them. To hard reset or block multi user connections would be awesome
