Limit Concurrent Streams Per Account

This is something clearly Plex is not interested in implementing (after 3+ years of complaints) so the truth is they don’t really listen to the feedback and requests of paying Plex Pass members but yet sometimes add/implement stuff that is not needed or will never be altered in settings. I would love to see this facility implemented (it must be so easy for Plex to do). We all know the problems of friends/family giving logon details to other friends/family (who you don’t necessarily want to share with) sometimes by accident when visiting and leaving Plex logged in. I see comments like ‘just block them’ and ‘Man up and tell them’ yes we all know that’s fine and dandy (and oooohhh so tough) but in reality when dealing with friends and family it is not always so straightforward. One way I have gotten around this which is a bit convoluted but does seem to work is via an Ip Blocker. I monitor via Plexpy and see who is playing under the same account (family its easy as I know what tv models they have) and check where the ip address are located and then block that address if it appears not to be from where I would expect it. Until Plex pull their finger out and start reading and taking note of what Plex users want this seems to work for me.

Plex is listening – and this feature is coming…

errr not exactly. If you read what the complaints are people want to limit the streams per user seperately ie; I may allow one user 4 streams but another user only 1. what has been implemented is akin to a big stick to beat all due to the misbehaviour of just one. So it appears Plex is listening after all…but only with one ear at the moment.

Here Here!! This would be BIG if implemented. A global max count (safety max) and a per user max would allow abuse and overloading to be stopped before it happens. It’s a rather proactive approach keeping in mind different users have different needs especially between ‘typically remote’ and ‘typically local’ users.

Who has the time to periodically check logs to see if friends and family aren’t abusing things just to make a harsh action like IP banning them. Just set the users limits in their share settings and done. Brought one step further, the ability of having separate local and remote stream limits for individual users would be cream on the cake. (Some of us have low upstream speeds)

Everyone … Vote +1 on this please.

100% Agree, I Voted +1, please add this feature to customize per user.

Just wondering if Settings > [Server Name] > Network > Remote streams allowed per user isn’t exactly what you’ve been asking for (though it’s only available for Plex Pass members)?!

Or is this suggestion about having that option on a per-account basis?!

From https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/

Remote streams allowed per user

You can set the maximum number of simultaneous streams each user is allowed to have, when not on the same network as the Plex Media Server (the “local” network).

Tip! : This feature requires an active Plex Pass subscription for the Plex Media Server admin Plex account.

Hi tom80H

No, it asks if it is possible to set the streams per user. Currently this is only possible globally for each friend. (What you have linked) For it to be logical, you would have to be able to set it per account, so per individual friend. I also have several families that now have to make 2-3 accounts to use it, instead of only having to make one and then create home accounts for themselves for the kids for example. Now I have to control the whole thing on the server and actually block accounts for others.

I do not understand why such settings are always only global with you.

The same with the transcoding. It should also be possible to prevent this by category. Because a real problem are only the 4K files. Now I have to run a separate server for those who want to use 4K without transcoding and a 2nd for everything else with transcoding. Because only 4K kills the server.
It’s really a pity that you always make it so difficult for the server admins. Whether you set it globally or per account (user) or per category is a pure YES or No question for the server. So a pure authorization question and would not complicate it to program. I think rather you block such things consciously. That is just a pity!

All these years and the Plex team still hasn’t developed?

I almost paid for the Pass thinking I already had it.

Unfortunate.

If plex adds this functionality per user and therefore limits each user individually by connection or reading, then I will take the plex pass directly! I’m only looking for this feature!

Along these same lines, another feature I’d like to see is the ability to set stream limits per-user. I have some users that I don’t mind if they stream multiple things at the same time. Some other users, I’d prefer to limit them to only 1 stream at a time. I think there is a lot of missed potential in the per-user controls. They seem to want to push people to PlexPass so hide these options behind the pay wall. Fine with me. I just want them to exist.
