Help wanted, plex server installed on hosting server. Plex server seems to go offline regularly, unsure why. Hosting company is also unsure. I would to see if someone can tell me how to get the logs from this server and if someone can have a look at the logs and tell me what is going wrong?

would appreciate the help please, i am a user not an computer expert

ssh to the server.
create a compressed tarball (tar.gz) of the logs.
rcp or download from their file administration gui???

once you have the file, you can get it here.

Thank you, i have used ssh to restart the server. That is just copy and paste command for me. Would you know the command to get the file? My first problem is that i do not know how to get the files. Fyi the server is running at the moment and i can dowload files from the server using filezilla. I would need to know where to find these files. Hope you can help

This is part of learning and running a Linux system.

Google is your friend.

ok that was easier then i thought, i have a number of log files downloaded. what one do you need or do you need all?

this is a screenshot. not sure if you can view this

All of them in a ZIP or tar.gz because I have no idea where to start. Piece at a time is painful.

Plex Media Server.rar (1.7 MB)

thank you for taking the time to look at this, i have been with this issue for a couple of years now. i am thinking it must be something to do with the hosting end, thats why i asked them to look at it. but that has had no positive result. I have a plex server at home that works perfectly fine. i have a plex pass and absolutly love it. Thank you for you and the teams great work.

Please redo?

ZIP or tar.gz . I do not have RAR. I don’t have Windows here.

appologiesPlex Media Server.zip (2.3 MB)

Thank you for the logs. I can tell you precisely why it’s failing

  1. Feral hosting does not use VM’s or Containers. They use Namespaces which are a very old enterprise grade way of configuring applications.
  2. Plex is not written to run in that environment.

What specifically happens on their end:

  1. One person on the host launches Plex, it’s fine
  2. When the next customer launches Plex, the second Plex instance, not being looking for namespace isolation, sees the other “Plex Media Server” process, and terminates it
  3. This second person will run until another customer shows up with Plex on that server. The second will get terminate and the third will be left standing.
  4. About this time the first customer realizes it’s down and manually restarts which kills the third person.

Wash - rinse - repeat forever.

Short version: Get a new hosting company. Feral isn’t compatible with Plex and without ripping all of PMS apart and recoding, it won’t be. Feral is the only hosting known hosting company to have this problem. Yes they know why, I’ve told them in the past about this. Obviously they ‘forgot’

@AntonyMarkman

Use which information and in which context?

ok that is
not so good i guess. thank you for explaining and maybe i need to have a look for another hosting company any suggestions?

I have heard of Hetzner but know nothing about then.
It would be inappropriate to recommend one over another.
