Lip sync on SHIELD Pro 2019

I am following this topic very closely as I have noticed some lip sync issues on my system as well (very minor though, and kind of random). But to me, new VS old player doesn’t make a difference.

I was curious: is the “new” player bringing new playback tech or is it just a UI redesign ?

I just wanted to chime in that I’m having this problem too. Doesn’t seem to matter what I play (old TV series or brand new BR release) - the result is the same, audio is out of sync. To fix it I press skip back and it resolves - but it’s getting frustrating having to do it constantly.

I confirmed I’m on the latest everything (Shield and Plex updated), doing direct play on ethernet, it happens on both the new and old/classic player.

Same for me, pressing back to go back 10 seconds seems to fix the issue. The delay is very small so not always easy to notice and I can’t figure out when it’s coming back, whether it’s all of a sudden or if it’s a more gradual thing.

I just got my Shield two weeks ago so I can’t compare with other versions of the Plex app or other systems.

yeh I am fairly certain it does drift back - though I’m not 100% on that without doing some more testing.

For me it’s a new problem - I’ve had a Shield for around 2 years now - using plex for at least 12 months. It’s something that only started happening 4-6 weeks ago

yep thats about when it started

best to turn off the new player at the moment, the old player doesnt have the issue

Thanks for that - I did try that a couple weeks ago and for some reason it didn’t work. Regardless I tried last night and watched several episodes without any issue - so thanks again for the tip.

I guess my next question is are we reporting this in the right place? Will plex fix this issue without having to resort to using the old player?

it is, it would be more helpful is more people were complaining about this here on the forum.

I’ll see if any of the guys over at /r/ShieldAndroidTV/ are having the issue and get them to post if so.

Having this issue on my nvidia shield. 50% of the time the audio is out of sync with the video and needs to be restarted. Even when I do that long shows / movies tend to drift out of sync over time. I have disabled the new player and that seems to fix the issue.

  • was linked here from /r/ShieldAndroidTV after googling this issue

For what it’s worth, my issues are now gone :man_shrugging:.

I spent a lot of time debugging this issue in PLex and in Kodi. Ultimately, I noticed some stutter when doing passthrough of HD audio tracks on some videos. The HD audio passthrough would cause the video to skip one or two frames randomly every 30 seconds or so. The non-HD track off the same videos would always play perfectly. It was easy to reproduce, on both Kodi and Plex.

Several Shield reboots later, everything is now smooth. I haven’t anything. My gut feeling is that my issues might be stemming from HDMI handshake issues, or maybe some background work happening at system level and disturbing the play

Here is a summary of my setup:
NVidia Shield 2019 Pro, NO hotfix installed
Gigabit LAN connection
Plex 7.28
Yamaha RX-1080a
EPSON EH-TW7100
Playing mostly makemkv rips, with VC1, H264 and HEVC videos, direct play only
Passthrough: HDMI
New Player: ON (Turning ON and OFF seems to make no difference to me)
Adapt Display Refresh Rate: ON

@devs: It would be really making a difference if we could have more debug info about what’s happening at the player level. Similar to what Kodi does Video playback - Official Kodi Wiki. Turning this ON on My shield with Kodi as allowed me to precisely and quantitatively detect video stutters.

I know that you are using ExoPlayer V2 for the new player, I would love to know if we could print some of its debug info as an overlay.

Also, if there is ia better way to interact, like a Slack community, that would be great, we could also provide files samples to reproduce issues.

I’ll post back here if the issue arises again.

Thanks and keep up with the great work, I’m looking forward to Plex being the perfect solution for Shield and audio passthrough.

EDIT: The delays and variations I am talking about are around 50ms at most, very hard to notice, it requires videos where you can make sure when sound is supposed to happen (with shocks for instance), not sure if it the same order of magnitude that other users are reporting.

Same issue. Noticed it on some episodes, but more or less that the audio is slowly getting out of sync. I notice it because my subtitles are getting out of sync (i went to resync them a couple of times), but it’s more that the audio wasn’t cutting it anymore. Using direct play, no transcodes on a shield 2019 pro.

I have same issue, but I just disabled new player and it solved it for me. Figured I’d retry again at some point in the future. This is with my shield pro, and on an Amazon fire stick that streams from the shield. Disabled new player on both and problem solved.

I just bought a shield and am frustrated by this issue. Makes me consider switching to Kodi or returning the shield.

I also have this problem. If I stop the video and then play it again, the audio gets back in sync.

Seems to have started within the last couple of weeks.

I am also experiencing these audio sync issues with Plex on the Shield Pro 2019. My setup is Shield > TV > Sony amp. It doesn’t make any difference whatsoever if I switch to the old player. I have also tried rebooting and skipping back during playback, but neither resolves the audio sync issue. The audio is out by 10’s of ms, not hundreds, but easily noticeable when watching people speak. Very distracting when trying to enjoy a show/movie. Other apps work fine with no audio sync issues. @devs are you working on a fix for this? A lack of response to this thread makes it look as though you aren’t.

I returned my shield pro and got a firestick 4k because of this.

Of course the firestick 4k Plex app has it’s own issues. The most recent client (7.29) cannot play 4k videos natively. Lol

for me there are 2 issues at the moment with the new player in regards to audio

-audio is completely out of sync intermittantly, stopped and restarting video will fix it
-audio is 100% of the time out of sync 10ms or so compared to the old player and all other shield apps in all causes in both passthough enabled and disabled configs

fix this issue! the new plex player sucks

Noticed this issue on 2017 Shield native Plex app playing 4K HDR with DTS-HD audio track. Plex within the Kodi app has the proper sync. Please fix the native app.

I see a lot of folks with Plex Pass by their names (including me) that are likely wondering why they continue to invest in a product when a flaw like this is still outstanding for months upon months.

At least we have random DVR fixes… :expressionless:

Anyway - Also impacted by this and it’s driving me mental. 2017 Shield, doesn’t matter if it’s 720p, 1080p, 4k, audio sync issues all over the place. Rewind 10 seconds and it resolves. Until it drifts too badly, rewind 10 seconds again.
